After hearing the sound, Mark came to the door
and kicked it. He yelled.
“Shawna, that’s enough, stop trying to get my
attention! It’s not gonna work. After the New
Year’s I’ll let you out. Now be quiet!”
I tried to scream for help, but my voice was
nothing more than a dry, pathetic whisper.
Blood was still coming out of me, my heart was
sinking.
To punish me, Mark grabbed Lily and started
making out against the bathroom door.
“Mark, don’t, Mrs. Bennett is gonna hear us!”
“Lily is no just some girl.”
Lily was playing hard to get, making Mark even
more excited.
I looked desperately at the window, praying
someone would find the coat.

“Boom boom boom”
The fireworks were beautiful, the New Year had
begun.
Outside the bathroom door, Mark spoke softly.
“Happy New Year, my little wildcat.”
Lily’s kisses and moans answered him.
“Meow, meow…”
Through the frosted glass, I could see them
making out.
I started remembering what Mark and I were
like before.
I was an orphan.
I had made it to college, earning a scholarship.
Mark, two years older, first saw me at a
campus event.
I was on stage giving a speech.
I was confident, calm, and pretty.
Mark told me he fell in love at first sight.
He found out everything he could about me and
started chasing me.
Mark came from a well–off family, I thought we
were from different worlds.
He didn’t give up. He stuck by me for two
<
years.
He’d be there for me, no matter what.
I was an orphan, I had never really felt loved.
For the first time, someone had made me feel
special.
I agreed, and we started dating.
I fell for him hard.
Then I found out he was a love child, his mother
was one of the CEO’s mistresses.
He cared a lot about his family, so after
graduation, he started his own company.
Mark wanted to show his family that he didn’t
need their money.
I helped him grow the company, and people
called us a perfect match.
We were each other’s salvation.
But, after I got pregnant everything changed.
My pregnancy was awful, so Mark asked me to quit and stay at home.
We had waited seven years for this baby, it was more important than anything else, so I agreed. After I left the office, Mark hired a pretty, young secretary named Lily.
<
I have to admit, she was very pretty.
I first saw Lily in Mark’s office, in the
breakroom.
Mark said.
“She’s the new secretary, our college’s little
sister. She has her period and needed to rest
here.”
Lily blinked.
“Mrs. Bennett, I’m sorry. You’re a woman, you
understand right?”
I felt uneasy, telling Mark to be careful.
If she felt so sick, she needed to go home, not
lounge on a married man’s bed.
Mark said I was being too sensitive, that I
should be nice to the girl.
“Pregnant women are so emotional, you used
to not be like this.”
I was worried, I thought it was me.
But then he started getting closer to Lily.
There were women’s slippers and clothes in the
office, not mine.
Pink accessories, makeup powders in his desk
drawer.
<
Atter one night, I saw a nickey on his neck.
I started screaming, asking him if he was having
an affair.
Mark just stared coldly, like I was a crazy
person.
“Are you done?”
