“She only has a few days left…”
Chapter 2
Right after that comment, I heard Chad go
ballistic.
He kicked a chair across the room and grabbed
the doctor by the collar, totally losing it. “What
the hell are you saying?! How could Brittany be
dying? I treated her like a queen at that
mountain cabin for five months! There’s no way
<
The doctor was choking, unable to speak.
Tiffany tried to play peacemaker, all innocent- like. “Honey, if she had the strength to slap me across the face, she can’t be that sick. Right? Maybe Brittany and this quack doctor are trying to trick you. You know, so you feel bad about what she did to my face, and all of that.”
“Oh, Brittany, you woke up!” she squealed. “It’s okay, Brittany, you don’t have to apologize. I’m not mad. You pushed me down the stairs, remember? As long as you’re happy, I don’t care what happens to me…”
Tiffany had her hair pulled back to make sure
Chad could see the scars from the stitches on
her face.
New injury plus old injury meant that Chad
bought Tiffany’s version of reality.
He yanked me up out of the bed. The IV needle

ripped out of my hand, splettering blood
everywhere.
“Brittany! I just can’t understand you anymore!
First you try to kill someone, then you disfigure
them! If Tiffany wasn’t so forgiving, you’d be
rotting in jail!”
“Get up, and deal with the pain!”
The doctor tried to reason with him, saying I
needed to stay under observation, but Chad
wasn’t listening.
He was convinced I was faking it, so he
dragged me home.
Unfortunately for Chad, the doctor was telling
the truth.
My body was breaking down fast.
I started bleeding spontaneously.

Every so often, blood would just seep out of my skin. To hide it, I started wearing red clothes.
Chad noticed and stopped cold when he saw
me in a scarlet dress.
“Brittany… why are you wearing that dress?”
Before I married Chad, I loved flamboyant red
dresses. This particular dress was the first gift
he ever bought me.
It was my prized possession. During a house
fire, I only remembered to grab that dress.
Chad had just returned from a business trip,
and his eyes snapped to me, standing in the
road clutching the red dress.
He hugged me, then whispered, “You’re such a
goofball.”
Yeah, I was a goofball.

I d put our relationship above everything else.
I went against everything I’d ever been taught
and turned into a jealous, insecure shrew.
Now, it looked like I was gonna die a horrible
death.
“It’s just a dress, Chad. I felt like wearing it.”

Chad looked like he’d been slapped, then spun
around and stomped away.
I could hear Tiffany and Chad whispering
outside the door.
“Honey, I think Brittany is faking being sick
again. I should go with you to that gala this
year.”
Chad shot her down without thinking.
“No.”

“Brittany is my wife. She has to go to the gala
with me.”
Every year, I’d go to the family gala with Chad,
and this year was no different.
This year, I wanted to be left alone.
I threw open the door. “Chad, I won’t be going
to any galas with you in the future.”
Chad got so angry that he didn’t speak to me
for two days. Instead, Tiffany came to visit.
She wasn’t nearly as sweet when Chad wasn’t
around. She marched right up to me and
shoved me.
“Brittany, I can’t believe you’re not dead! After
you were forced to live in the mountains for five
months, I thought you’d be gone by now.”
“Unfortunately, the doctors said you’re dying
I side–eyed her. Little did she know, she was
almost dead, too.
I wasn’t sure why I had survived in the radiation
zone as long as I had, but she was doomed.
Tiffany must have thought I was scared
because she sneered at me and told me the
truth about my parents.
“Brittany, did you ever wonder why your parents
killed themselves?”
She smiled maliciously.
“The day your business went bankrupt, I used
your cell phone to send your parents a
message, telling them to die!”
“I didn’t expect those two idiots to actually kill
themselves, but they really did it! They jumped
in front of a train!”

“It was on the news, and everyone was talking
about it!”
My family business failed because of an unfair
attack by a rival firm, leading to our bankruptcy.
Lots of people came to our house, and some
people committed suicide.
My parents sold their house to pay off the
employees, so they could get their wages.
They did everything they could.
When I came home from abroad, they were
dead.
I thought it was the public pressure that drove
them to suicide, but it was because of a text
message from me.
I clenched my fists as I looked at Tiffany’s smug
face.
<
My parents loved me. They would have never
jumped in front of a train, but after they
received a message from me, they had no hope.
The moment I landed, I got a call from the funeral home.
And Tiffany sat in the passenger seat, grinning
as she snapped pictures of me and sold them to the news.
That same day, the whole world knew that the
CEO of the Su company had died.
The internet celebrated.
Some extremists broke into the funeral and
ruined the ceremony, throwing garbage at their
caskets.
“Did you know I put the location of the funeral on the Internet? Those people were so loud.”
<
“What’s wrong Brittany, you were stupid, why
would you get in my way?”
Tiffany clutched her face, and ran to Chad,
She ran to Chad with the lic, “Honey, I just
made some soup for Brittany, and then she hit
me! My scars hurt so much!”
The housekeeper nodded.
“That’s right, sir. I saw the Madam hit Miss
Tiffany.”
