Chapter 8 Leaving
But I watched for a long time, and she still had no intention of kneeling down.
A year had passed, but Bonnie was still the same old Bonnie, always talking one way and acting another.
“Kathryn, please forgive me, okay? We were together for six whole years. Don’t you know what kind of person I am?”
That question hit me hard.
Before all of this happened, I had always been confident in my judgment of Stephen.
I thought I understood him better than anyone else.
But after everything that had unfolded, I no longer dared to judge him.
“What kind of person are you? Don’t ask me. Ask yourself first!”
I pushed his hand away and started arranging the things I had brought.
“Dad, this is what Keith insisted I bring you. It’s a steak he made himself…”
I pointed to Keith and motioned for him to come over and speak

to my father.
Keith paused for a moment and then walked over.
He knelt down with a loud thud and then bowed several times, each bow echoing.
It startled me.
I had thought he was just going through the motions. After all, as my father’s close disciple. He should at least come by and pay his respects.
But no one expected him to be so serious.
“Professor, I’m so sorry. When you passed, I was at a turning point in my life, and I just couldn’t make the time to see you off. These years, I’ve been traveling abroad, but I’ve sent flowers and cleaned your grave every year…”
When I heard this, I was deeply moved.
Before I left, I had gone to visit my parents‘ grave once.
But when I arrived, I found the graveyard unusually clean.
I asked the staff, and they told me that someone often came to help maintain it.
I thought it was one of my parent’s old friends and didn’t think much
of it.
I never imagined it was him.
As he spoke, he began to cry.
“At the time, Kathryn and I were secretly seeing each other…”
At that moment, Stephen suddenly stood up.
But Keith didn’t stop. Instead, he kept going. “I thought you didn’t know, but you taught me how to make steak and fried chicken. You said she didn’t like food from the restaurant. If I wanted to be with her, I had to learn. Only then could I marry your daughter.”
As he spoke, he stood up.
Suddenly, he pulled out a ring from behind him.
Then he knelt down on one knee and held the ring up to me.
“A year has passed, Kathryn. Do you still like the steak and fried chicken I make?”
I was momentarily stunned, but instinctively I nodded.
He smiled faintly.
“Then, will you marry me? I’ll make you anything you want to eat every day.”
Before I could say anything, Stephen and Bonnie both shouted in unison, “No!”

Stephen immediately stood in front of me and pointed at Keith.
“Even though there were some issues between me and her a year ago, it’s not your place to speak!”
Stephen treated me like a prize he had already claimed.
It seemed that my past obedience to him had given him the illusion. that, after everything, I would still treat him the same.
I shoved him away.
As he staggered, I asked, “I’ll only ask you one question. If you can answer it, we can talk. If you can’t, then get lost.”
