- 4.
When I woke up, the smell of antiseptic was
heavy in the air.
I stared at the sterile white ceiling, slowly
regaining strength, my fingers moving to
touch my stomach.
く
Cold. Empty.
This was where a tiny, warm life should have
been.
Now it was gone.
And I was lying there like a vegetable, unable
to even mourn properly.
“Honey?”
Someone was calling to me. It was Mrs.
Rodriguez. I tried to focus on her, but my
vision was still blurry.
I just wanted to hug Mrs. Rodriguez and cry
my eyes out.
Drin
く
Drip.
A tear from Mrs. Rodriguez landed on my
hand, burning me.
“Oh, sweetie, my poor sweetie…”
“Why does no one ever truly care about you?”
Yes, Mrs. Rodriguez, there’s you, you care
enough to approach me.
I smiled at the blurry figure beside me. It’s
okay, don’t cry.
I spent the next few days in the ICU, fighting
off the effects of malnutrition and the
miscarriage.
But I wasn’t going to let it beat me. I was
く
going to live.
Live and get revenge on my enemies, the
people who made me lose my baby.
Brittany Carter, Liam Walker, you weren’t
getting away with this.
On the fifteenth day of my hospital stay, not a
single member of the Carter family came to
see me. Not that I expected them to.
It was Mrs. Rodriguez who brought me
homemade soup, as always.
Her face was actually beaming. I asked her
what was up.
She was so excited, like a little kid. “Little
Mikey’s getting surgery! He’s going to be
く
okay! He’s going to be a healthy kid!”
“Really? That’s wonderful news, Mrs.
Rodriguez!”
I smiled, looking at the green leaves outside
the window. Mikey would be like that, full of
life again.
She said, “It’s all thanks to that man, honey. If
he hadn’t paid for the medicine, and hired
someone to take care of Mikey, I don’t know
what I would’ve done.”
I didn’t hear the rest of what she said. My
mind was flashing back to my first surgery,
when Mrs. Rodriguez was terrified I wasn’t
going to make it.
She told me a secret.
L
Brittany Carter, or rather, Brittany Wilson, was
the Carter’s real daughter.
When Mrs. Carter found out, she cried over
her long–lost daughter. She told Mr. Carter to
punish me, the imposter.
But Mr. Carter said, Brittany and I were twins.
Brittany had a hard life, but I was their true
daughter, and I deserved to live the life of the
rich.
After that, I could fill in the blanks.
My mother, or Mrs. Carter cared for her real
daughter, and hated me.
But, was that all there was?
felt like there was more to the story than
Looking at Mrs. Rodriguez, I didn’t want to
press her about it.
I would find the truth myself.
The day before I was discharged, I spotted an
unwanted visitor outside my room.
“Liam? What are you doing here?”
The man in the suit looked flustered, he
glanced at my stomach.
I took a step back, frowning. “What are you
doing here?”
He looked hurt. “Ashley, don’t be like that.
We’re childhood friends. I thought we could…”
く
Childhood friends?
That’s so stupid!!! It makes me sick.
I opened my mouth to say something, but I
spotted Brittany Wilson in the distance,
looking furious.
I watched Liam, my eyes filling with tears.
“Liam, do you still think of me as your fiancé?
Do you still want to marry me?”
Liam’s lips quivered. He couldn’t say it.
In his guilty eyes, I started to cry, I cried so
loud.
Liam looked even more guilty, he reached out
to hug me, but someone grabbed him.
L
“Honey, there you are! I’ve been looking
everywhere for you.”
Brittany Wilson smiled, she seemed so
innocent, you wouldn’t have thought she was
just giving me the death stare.
I looked at them, I smiled to Liam.
“Sis has already left, so let’s go.”
“Okay.”
Their voices got farther away. I took a paper
crane from Mrs. Rodriguez, Mikey made it.
Go ahead.
Liam was already feeling bad for me. I just
saw how uneasy he was
く
This would hurt them. I was going to use that
time to investigate a few things.
As for Brittany Wilson’s revenge, we’ll see
who is able to get her revenge first.
