This was the first time he’d been angry.
After the guy left, Sam pinched my cheek.
“I’m glad I got here in time. What if my fiancé
got hurt?”
He said “fiancé” and my heart skipped a beat.
“Sam!” Sarah asked. “What are you doing
<
Sam said, “I got here an hour ago. I missed
my fiancé.”
“You’re engaged!?” Sarah asked.
She said, “Did Chloe say yes?”
“Tell Sarah,” Sam said.
I blushed. “Sarah, I’m marrying Sam.”
Sarah cheered. “Good for you! You waited so
long for her!”
I asked, “You knew he liked me?”
Sarah said, “Everyone knew. You’re the only
one who didn’t. You were too busy with
Ryan.”

As we were leaving the bar, Ryan’s friend
called.
“Hey, Chloe. Ryan’s been drinking. You need
to come here. He won’t listen to us.”
“It’s bad for him. He’s going to be sick.”
I said, “We broke up. It’s not appropriate for
me to come.”
He said, “Ryan just likes you! He’s just
kidding about Tiffany.”
“It doesn’t matter to me.”
“Chloe, do you think you’re something
special?” Ryan asked. “You’re going to regret
this.”
く
I was about to hang up.
“Chloe, why are you so mean? You left so
easily.”
I would’ve felt bad before.
But not anymore.
I hung up and deleted all his friends.
We’d never see each other again.
Chapter 8
Sam, Sarah, and I talked in front of the bar.
Sarah wanted to take a rideshare.
L
She wanted to give Sam and me time alone.
But she was drunk and it was late.
We took her home.
Then it was just Sam and me.
The air felt thick.
My head was spinning.
He got closer.
I bit my lip.
“Chloe…”
He kissed my cheek.
<
He was so gentle.
I was so nervous.
“I hope I’m not dreaming. What if this isn’t
real?”
He put his forehead against mine.
He was scared.
I touched his head. “I’m here. I’m not leaving.”
He nodded.
Sam came back because he missed me.
The next morning, he left.
