“To be accurate, it was your own kidney. You
got it back.”
My mind went blank.
“What about Ethan?”
Sam’s eyes flickered with sadness, but he
quickly smiled and said he was fine.
I saw through his act.
“No. He only had one good kidney. The one I
gave him. Now he’s given it back to me? How
can he survive?”
In the morgue, I pulled open the drawer.
Ethan lay there, pale and lifeless.
I started to cry.
Was I stupid or was he?
He asked me if I still loved him. I didn’t. I
hated him. I hated his coldness, his
selfishness.
I gave him salvation, but he had turned
around and saved me.
Ethan, I hate you!
Recently, I read in the news that Lily was
sentenced to eight years in prison for assault.
Ethan’s Story:
The first time I saw Olivia, I thought she was
crazy. She was always chasing me, and it was
annoying. She wasn’t my type. I only had eyes
for Lily.
Lily and I grew up together. She was a year
older than me, like a sister. I liked how mature
and understanding she was. After Lily’s dad
died, he entrusted her to my family. I was so
happy to have her there.
She was cold, and she started to distance
herself from me.
Unlike Lily, Olivia was too loud. She said she
loved me, wanted to be my girlfriend. I
rejected her, but she didn’t give up.
I told her that I loved Lily and she needed to
leave me alone. She looked sad. but then
smiled.
I never treated her nicely. She cooked my
favorite meals, but I ate a little and then
threw it away.
Gradually, I got used to her being around.
After graduation, I started my own business. I
was surprised to have customers. I hadn’t
even advertised.
Lily said she wanted to leave the country and
that I should forget about her. I bought a ring
and proposed to Olivia.
The day before the wedding, Lily changed her
mind. She confessed that she was in love with
- me.
I was confused. I almost wanted to marry
Olivia.
I rejected Lily.
Olivia looked happy during our wedding.
After the wedding, I thought she had stabbed
Lily.
When I saw Lily covered in blood, I lost my
mind and said horrible things to Olivia.
Lily said Olivia stabbed her, and my mom said
the cameras were broken, so I could not tell
the truth.
Lily was back to her old self.
She wanted to get married, and I agreed.
I asked her to help Olivia get out of jail so I
could get divorced and remarry.
Lily agreed.
I saw Olivia again, and she was pale and
skinny, the happy girl was gone.
I was sad. Lily pushed me to go.
After the divorce, I thought we would never
see each other again.
I ran into her at the bar, and my friends were
teasing her. I didn’t stop them.
She had an anxiety disorder, I saw her with
Sam.
I asked her if she still loved me.
She said, “I don’t love you.”
I was sad.
She was a mess.
I went to see Sam, and he told me everything
Olivia had done for me.
I felt guilty. I found the donation agreement
and her old journal.
Everything I have done was wrong.
I went to the hospital and saw her.
She said, “I do not love you.”
She was so sick.
I–decided to give her back her kidney.
I found a way to get Lily thrown in jail.
I gave my kidney to Olivia.
Olivia, I’m giving you back what you gave me.
