“Are you married?”
Just as I was about to leave, Daniel finally
asked.
“Yes,” I replied, turning my ring
absentmindedly. “We‘ re a perfect match. He loves me very much, and I love him too.”
The action felt familiar, reminding me of when Abigail told me she was getting married.
“I wish you happiness,” Daniel said after at long silence.
“If I hadn’t insisted on finding Abigail that time, would things have turned out differently for us?” His voice carried the weight of a question left unasked for too long.

bystander in this story. For years, I had been nothing more than a passive observer. The decisions had always been Daniel’s.
“Daniel,” I said quietly, “I’m actually glad you brought this up.”
He looked at me, waiting for me to continue.
“Otherwise, it would have been harder to end things if we had actually gotten married,” I admitted.
I wanted it to end gracefully, and somehow, it did.
