17 Chapter 17 POV Jake
This woman was infuriating. All I wanted was to stay at the cabin, talk this through and come to an agreement but here I am following her as if I was a puppy and there is Zeus whining away for Carissa it was driving me nuts.
“Good, tell me what happened to my mother“, She asked.
It shocked me to hear she believed what I had told her, as she stormed off in front of me I couldn’t help but allow the smile to grace my lips for a second.
I could see her eyes shining with hidden hope, I had to tell her honestly she had to be aware the mother she once knew wasn’t the same as she was now, “So, when your mother was part of the Jenkins pack they realised that she was special, like you,” I started.
Suddenly without warning Liberty stopped and I went straight into her and she stumbled forward and I reached to grab her to stop her falling. We both felt the sparks spread through our hands when they touched, she looked up at the sky and as the night drew in she sighed. I couldn’t quite make out if it was a happy sigh of
disappointment, “What do you mean special like me?“She asked, finally swallowing what emotion she was trying to mask.
“You saw what you did today? Your fur is different, you pulled power from the sky and the earth, it is all connected by your emotions, ” I told her.
She didn’t move but closed her eyes, rubbing her head and letting out the longest sigh, “Okay“, she said.
She spun around and started walking again.
“Your mother was a healer, she learnt to control her ‘powers‘ so Alpha Jenkins used that constantly. However there is a price to pay for it, each time your mother healed someone from the brink of death she literally aged somewhat, your father came to our pack and asked for help for his mate,” I said.
She shook her head, “How do I not know about this?” she asked me, narrowing her eyes while staring at me.
I must have been silent for too long because Liberty suddenly shouted, “JAKE, Why didn’t I know?“.
I could sense that she was scared, nervous but also I could see by the way she had changed walking she was excited to see her mother for the first time. I furrowed my brows and my stomach became knotted at the disappointment that I knew she would feel.
“The agreement between the packs was that they would wage a war to take your mother, they would keep her safe but they couldn’t take you all because the war would never cease, however I felt for you for the first time. I shouldn’t have we were only kids, but the image of your pain was etched within me for a time, I was there when you got hurt, I saw your mother bring you back from the dead and i watched her weep as she let you go,” I couldn’t help but feel the cold rush through me when the images of Liberty life had drained from her body flooded my mind.
Her tears rolled down her cheeks left unnoticed by her, she allowed them to roll as if they were her comfort. With her emotions high I could feel the gust of wind blow through us and the leaves pull from the earth as if they too struggled with which way to go. Everything she felt mimicked around me and she was oblivious to it all. “You were meant to be kept a secret, your powers were never meant to come into force. Your mother hexed you,” I told her.
“What? Hexed me?/??“She asked furrowing her brows, shaking her head.
“My mother wouldn’t do that“, she protested
“She placed a hex that your powers couldn’t appear unless, unless“, As I spoke I realised what I was about to say.
At that point I felt the goosebumps on my skin and I gritted my teeth as I spoke the next sentence, “Until you lost your loved one.”
She looked at me and an emotion flickered through her eyes and then she spoke quietly as if she was speaking to herself, “So when I thought I lost you?“. What could I say, I just nodded.
“After your outburst with Alpha Jenkins Luna after Harris chose a different mate to the one Alpha wanted, he thought that your powers would appear then. Even tormented your father in front of you to push Carissa to change but it didn’t work. You were Just liberty, scary but still just Liberty,” I told her with an awkward laugh.
“Why could I see those pictures of you in my mind?“, She asked.
I honestly didn’t know so I just shrugged.
“How can I love you when we hate each other?“, She asked.
Her words were hot and cut deep but I had to keep my face calm. I hated her too so I shouldn’t be surprised that she felt that way. I could feel Zeus pacing in my mind and not liking her words, “Once she mates with us, she will change her mind,” he growled at me.
“I told you Zeus we have to reject,” I scolded him.
“Why are you cursed?“, she suddenly stopped and asked.
“Because, after My father Alpha Drakos took your mother in, he was no better than Alpha Jenkins. He would make her heal his army and keep her locked up in the basement of the pack house. It wasn’t my plan when I was a kid, remember that!!!“, I urged.
I heard her sharp breath as she looked cautiously at me, placing her hand on my arm “You said healing people makes her older?“, she said.
I nodded, “Yes, she cursed me on my 16th and said that my mate whomever she was would be in danger. That myself or my mate would die if I do not reject my chosen one, “I told her.
Liberty open mouthed ‘wow‘, “So you expect that to be true?“, she asked.
Had she not heard what I said, I wondered.
“The Cabin is through there, you said you thought you died today because you saw your mother. Your mother can do many things Liberty so be aware and i will wait outside for you,” I said.
She turned to me, wide eyed and she suddenly shifted in her place, “What if she doesn’t like me?“, she asked.
I couldn’t help smiling, “I literally just told you that your mother is alive, hidden for years, cursed your ‘mate‘ so you will be mateless forever and that you have special powers, but you worry if she will like you?,” I said, rolling my eyes.
“Yeah, you are right☐☐..“, she said as she moved towards the door and then she said, “Why was it a deal I went back to the Jenkins pack?“, she asked. “Liberty“, The old woman called from the door.
Liberty gasped at the sight of her, “Mum, is that really you?“, she said excitedly.
As she went to run into her mothers arms hugging her tightly as if she was going to vanish before her,
Then all of a sudden she stopped and pushed away from her mother as if she was arguing with herself.
“I’m so sorry my love“, she said moving back towards Liberty.
Fach step she made closer to Liberty was each step backwards Liberty would take.
“Is that really you?“, She asked through a shaky voice.
“Of course my dear, I was expecting you“, she replied.
Zeus growled and rumbled through me. I frowned, “What’s the matter??“, I asked him.
“Something is off with her, can’t you smell it?“Zeus asked.
Suddenly Liberty moved backwards towards me, shifting and allowing Carissa to take control.
“What is it?“, the old woman Demanded as worry etched over her face,
I shifted, Zeus and Carrissa stood side by side, “Where is he!“, Carissa demanded.
The old lady cackled, “It is your destiny my daughter the same as it was mine!“, she called out. “Listen,” she commanded and Carissa bared her canines, “I won’t tell you again! Where is he?“. Zeus Heckles instantly stood on alert and he too bared his canines.
“Come see your mother, I have much to explain,” the woman said, stepping closer,
As Carissa sniffed the air around her, her growl grumbled inside,” I’d like nothing more than to see you mother, however I can smell them. Jenkins pack is here!“.
