Chapter 22

POV Milo

As I ended the call with Jess I couldn’t help but feel irritated by her conversation but didn’t know why.

“All okay?,” Jake asked me.

I just nodded and said, “Jess is staying with a friend tonight, she is fine.”

Jake raised his eyebrow but didn’t say a word as we walked up to the door of the packhouse.

“Give me the man, I will put him in the basement. He can sleep off the beating you already gave him and be ready for another one tomorrow,” I said with a smile.

Jake just handed him to me, nodding and then entered the house and stormed off to the office.

I have never seen him like this, I couldn’t help but feel that the path he was choosing wasn’t the path he wanted to take, he just didn’t realise it yet.

There was silence for a long time and an exhausted sigh,” No Boss, she hasn’t left the pack that is for sure. In fact no one has left“, he answered.

I thought back to the call I just had with Jess, I realised then why it had rooted under my skin and irritated me so much. I had known all our pack members, It was my job to. know and I knew we did not have a faith amongst them. “Has anyone come in?“, I suddenly asked. “Negative boss, I think with the Jenkins pack attacking us everyone has left us alone,” he said.

I nodded in agreement and thanked him then ended the link, then realisation dawned on me. Faith must be Liberty!

I looked down the hallway to the office but I thought of how distant he had been on the way back, cursing himself for letting her into the pack. He may have not seen it as a manifestation of the worry he felt for her but I did!.

He was distant and angry and uncontrollable. I didn’t feel the need to go tell him something that I may have been completely wrong about, so I thought it was best to make my way to Nana’s house without him.

As I got to the house it was sitting in darkness so I figured they just hadn’t arrived yet so I let myself in and sat in the chair in the sitting room in the dark..

As the door opened I switched the side lamp on making them both jump.

I watched as Jess grabbed the girl’s arm besides her pulling her behind her as I startled them.

I stood and raised my hands, “Sorry I didn’t mean to make you jump,” I said honestly.

Jess pursed her lips and narrowed her eyes, “Well what did you think was going to happen, sitting in the dark like that“, she said.

I looked her over, I saw her sweat form on her brow, the slight tremor of her lip, was she scared of me? That annoyed me even more.

“Well, I thought I would welcome your friend into the pack“, I said with a smile masking my annoyance.

Jess was scared of me, this wretched woman she needed to teach her a lesson. I have never done anything to hurt her yet she has destroyed me inside and out, I thought.

I stretched my hand out to the girl that hid behind Jess forcing her to come into view, “Hi I am Milo“, I beamed.

She stepped into view and I saw that she didn’t look like liberty at all.

The disappointment and confusion must have been evident on my face as she took my hand and gave it a firm shake, “Is there something wrong?,” she asked.

There was a niggle inside that this girl was familiar with me, I could sense as if I had met her before.

I closed my eyes and sighed, “No, I just thought“, I started to say.

“You thought what?,” Jess questioned.

I could hear the irritation in her voice which made me chuckle, “I don’t know Jess,” I said, shaking my head.

“Liberty has run away,” I told her.

I was expecting panic, shrieking that felt like someone piercing my ear drums but it didn’t come

. She simply said, ” She will be okay“.

I must have been confused by her reaction as she stepped towards me and glanced at faith standing next to her.

“Something is off“, said my wolf Chance.

I nodded in agreement as I walked past faith to the sink, I turned the tap on and pulled a glass from the cupboard. “Have you heard from her?,” I asked the girls behind my back.

“She has no scent,” Chance said.

I pursed my lips, “Hmm“, I said to him.

“No, I haven’t heard anything,” Jess said.

Faith fidgeted uncomfortably, shifting her gaze between Jess and myself and the door.

She was a flight risk that’s for sure, I downed my water and raised my eyebrow at Jess.

I walked towards the door and turned to face them,

“I don’t know how you did it, but I wouldn’t have recognised you at all if it wasn’t for one thing,” I said.

As Expected Liberty went to bolt for the door but I grabbed her before she could leave, “Listen to me first, Listen is all I ask and if you still want to run after then I will not stop you!“, I said slowly.

Jess shocked into silence just glared at me, Liberty stopped fighting with me and stomped to the sofa throwing herself down.”

I watched as Jess went and sat besides her holding her hand, true friendship I envied them. They shared something I had longed to have with Jess myself but it was impossible to get now.

I sighed and rubbed my head, “You know, you nearly fooled me! I wouldn’t even have said that was you until my wolf sensed you had no scent!“, I said movitig to the chair opposite them.

“Why are you telling us?, it doesn’t matter now, now you know she will have to leave!“Jess whined.

I furrowed my brows and said,” Why does she have to leave?“.

“Because you’ll tell Jake!“, Liberty whispered.

I shook my head and shrugged my shoulders, “Jess can you go away for five minutes please,” I asked,

Jess, stunned by my request, went to scold me and put me in my place but Liberty rubbed her arm,“It’s okay Jess“, she soothed.

“Jesus!“, she muttered as she stood up and gave a reassuring smile to Liberty and as she left the room she just glared at me which amused me, I couldn’t help but smile. “You love her, don’t you?“Liberty asked me.

I shrugged my shoulders and replied,” My love was never the one that was doubted“.

She smiled sympathetically at me and I leaned forward, “Don’t run Liberty,” I whispered.

“My job as Beta is to protect pack members, you are a pack member.

today has been a difficult one for you, I do not blame you for wanting to run from it all“, I said sincerely.

“I don’t know how you did this“, I said looking at her up and down gesturing with my hand at her transformation..

“I didn’t,Carissa knew how to change it” she said.

I frowned, “Liberty, you and Carissa are the same what she can do, you do also. She isn’t separated from you as much as you push her away, that is just you not accepting her fully, sorry that is you not accepting yourself‘ I said, this time it was my turn to gesture with a sympathetic smile.

“I won’t tell Jake you are here, I need you to be honest with me, can you do that?” I said as I shifted in my seat.

She nodded, I could tell she was masking her emotions as her eyes shimmered in the light.

Liberty’s Secrets

“What are you scared of?“, I asked.

She closed her eyes as if she was searching deep down for the right answer and then she opened them. They flickered back to brown for an instant before they settled on green again. I found it very intriguing to watch.

“That I’m not enough for anyone“, she answered with rawness and honesty.

I sucked in my breath and realised this was something she had to figure out, “You only have to be enough for yourself“, I said softly.

“Look, I won’t say that you are here and you are you but you need to figure out the scent issue. Jake will know instantly otherwise, “I said.

She nodded but stayed silent.

I cleared my throat “There’s a tale of an old wolf that roamed the earth, he too separated from his human.

He struggled internally with himself and the choices he had made.

The problem is that he rejected so much that his will to live faded and the wolf inside grew stronger until eventually the human was lost. It was said that the rejection from his mate was what pushed him over the edge but others say it was because he couldn’t accept the life that was carved out for him by the moon goddess.

“Jess you can come back now,” I called not wanting to push this conversation further.

She stormed back in and threw herself besides liberty.

I smiled at Liberty and stood, “See you around Faith“, I said with a wink.

I took great comfort in rattling Jess cage, she would always see the green eyed monster in any action I did and I revelled in it.

Liberty smiled at me and said, “Thank you Milo“.

I simply nodded and made my way out.

As I walked away I heard Jess come running down the path, I stood still for a moment to let her catch up, before walking again “Did you mean it?,” she said breathlessly. “Mean what?“, I questioned.

“That you wouldn’t tell?,” she asked again, grabbing my shoulder to make me stop walking.

“Let’s be clear, you are questioning my word?,” I asked angrily.

I saw her stunned and her mouth gaped open, “No☐☐ I wasn’t“, she trailed off.

“My word is my life, I have never let people down, it isn’t me that she should worry that would tell her secret,” I spat, jabbing her with my finger.
