Chapter 12
Chapter 12: Fearless of Divorce
But still she felt let down
Emma picked up her bag from the sofa. It was the same bag that always leaned against the corner of the couch behind her. Soraya’s triumphant smile froze of the corners of her lips
Emma slung the bag over her right shoulder, straightened her back, and walked away with style. After taking a few steps, she stopped and delivered a
relationship–ending statement. “As you wish! I hope you get the divorce papers sorted out smoothly tomorrow morning. Thank you!”
“Emma!”
Luc could hardly believe what he was hearing How could she, how could she dare? His handsome face was now filled with the frost of winter, his anger
reaching its peak.
“Emma, what do you think you are? Marrying into our family was about securing our wealth, wasn’t it? Dreaming of divorce to split the assets? In your dreams!
Soraya shrieked behind her, her face twisted with malice. She could hardly believe that Emma would agree to a divorce
Emma Turned around, her dark eyes glinting dangerously. “Soraya, didn’t your brother, mother, and grandmother tell you that when I married Luc, your family insisted on a prenuptial agreement? Drop your nasty thoughts. Your miserable expression only makes people nauseous!”
“You” Jane, seeing Emma mercilessly retort to her beloved daughter, felt a surge of intense hatred. How could her precious girl be treated this way? She stared at Emma’s retreating figure, wishing she could pierce her back with her gaze.
“See, the good wile you marned!”
Emma didn’t look back. Her figure was casual yet strong, exuding a cool and ethereal temperament. The light cast a faint halo around her slender form. She was self–reliant, cold, and determined, like the rising sun driving away the winter gloom. She left Luc’s house without any signs of attachment
Karen listening to the quarrel from the kitchen, shrank back, afraid to come out. She could only watch everything unfold from a distance.
There was one clear conclusion–Emma had truly changed today!
Soraya stood in shock, trying to process what had just happened. Had she taken the wrong medication? Or was she possessed? This was definitely not the Emma she knew!
Only Luc watched Emma’s departing figure, unable to shake off the feeling that something important was slipping away. His throat felt tight, as if he were choking on something: He opened his mouth to speak but remained silem..
The air in the room seemed to solidify, creating a suffocating atmosphere due to the sudden drop in temperature.
Lady Taylor sighed, breaking the silence. “Luc, what are you going to do?”
“Grandma, what can I do? We should have parted ways a long time ago. I don’t know what you were thinking back then; how could you agree to let her into our family?‘ Soraya sat beside Mrs. Taylor, trying to soothe her.
Jane also sat on the sofa, echoing. “Mom, I disagreed from the start, Wasn’t this a disaster waiting to happen?!
“Alright, are you blaming me now?”
Seeing the old lady’s anger, Jane quickly changed her tone. “Mom, that’s not what I meant. The moment Emma entered this house, I never intended for her to stay with Luc for long. It was you who wanted someone to take care of him, mentioning his health issues, and only then did I reluctantly agree.”
From the very beginning, she never thought that her son and Emma could last and had prepared for divorce long ago.
Chewing on a Brazil nut, Soraya lazily said, “Mom, you’re unbelievable. Why not just hire a housekeeper instead of having Emma here? A housekeeper would manage my brother’s meals just fine. Why create more stress for me?” T
Turning to Luc, sh
she asked, “Luc, when will Lindsey return? I miss her.”
“Shut up. Soraya! If it weren’t for you. “Lady Taylor had grown tired of her prattling. Couldn’t she see that Luc was not in a good mood?
Jane, unwilling to let Mrs. Taylor scold her daughter, interrupted, “Mom, it’s not entirely Soraya’s fault. She’s just a bit capricious, the real problem is Emma.”
“Enough I’m asking Luc!
The three women of the Taylor family continued their chatter, while Luc sat on the sofa, silent, his expression icy, eyes filled with a deep, frosty gaze. Whether he agreed with his mother and sister’s words or not, the chill he radiated made Soraya hold her tongue.
“Are you all done? Luc’s voice was as cold as ice, histone chilling and intimidating.
“Luc, what does that mean? Jane felt discontent with her son’s cold demeanor, interpreting it as an implication that she and her daughter had done something wrong
“I am not getting a divorce.”
do you mean? Given Emma’s earlier attitude, could her brother still endure it? How was
Soraya was taken aback and pressed urgently, “What? Luc, what do y that possible?
“At least not now,” Lue added before swiftly exiting the room.
Jane shouted after him, “Luc, what’s so great about that woman? I thought you liked Emma?“–
All she received was the sight of Luc’s retreating figure…..
Soraya rushed to Jane and asked, “Mom, does Luc have another plan? Is he waiting for Emma to return before asking for a divorce?
Believing she had hit the nail on the head, triumph flashed in her eyes. “That’s it! He just needs someone to keep him company. When Emma returns, he’ll propose the divorce and discard that audacious woman” COL
Dare to ignore me? Dare to anger me? In the end, won’t you still be dumped by my brother?
Before the mother–daughter duo could continue, Lady Taylor slowly rose from her seat, unable to listen any longer. Seeking some peace, she headed to
her room.
“Mom, can you not decide this? Or offer some wisdom to Luc?” Jane knew her son often heeded his grandmother’s advice, so she was interested in Lady
Taylor’s viewpoint.
Lady Taylor’s pace was slow, and Jane quickly moved to assist her. “After so many years, you still can’t figure out your son. You, as a mother, really Lady Taylor shook her head and said no more. Her daughter–in–law was all flash and no substance, always dressing exquisitely but lacking real intelligence She hadn’t agreed to her elder son marrying this woman initially. Had it not been for her deep affection for her cherished son, she would never have given her consent. Later, when this woman stepped into Taylor’s grand home and demonstrated care for her son, coupled with her ability to produce Luc and Soraya, she reluctantly changed her mind.
“What do you mean? Mom,” but Lady Taylor ignored her and returned to her room.
Jane knew that Mrs. Taylor had always looked down upon her. While she could be proudly willful in front of others, she was humble and submissive in front of Mrs. Taylor. Thankfully, she bore a son and a daughter to secure her position in the Taylor family. So what if Mrs. Taylor didn’t like her? She had a distinguished son who in Boston would not spare her a glance?
“Mom, what does Grandma mean? What does my brother mean? I don’t understand.
Jane thought she had figured out Mrs. Taylor’s thoughts. ‘Grandma must want Emma to take care of your brother more closely for a while. Having a free caretaker is a great deal, right? A hired one might not be as attentive”
Soraya thought Jane made sense. She nodded and asked again. Then what do you think my brother means? I can’t figure out his intentions.”
“Didn’t your brother say that he’s not getting divorced, at least not now? He probably thinks Emma is still new and exciting for him. Wait until she comes back, and he’ll divorce her and choose someone else.”
Soraya’s eyes brightened. She agreed with this and laughed, “My brother is just too deep and reserved, never one to voice his feelings. If he had confessed to Emma earlier, he wouldn’t have ended up marrying someone like her, who is neither suitable in status nor family background, right?”
