Chapter 18
Chapter 18 The Unexpected Midnight Visit
He took out his phone, swiftly swiped the lock screen, and dialed Emma’s number Emma was in the shower, and her phone was left on the living room sofa so she didn’t notice Hidden away in the bedroom, Catherine heard the phone ring and quickly got out of bed to answer
She guessed it must be Luc calling her daughter and felt happy. But when she saw the name “ZNGB” displayed on the screen, she paused: Who was this, looking for Emma in the middle of the night?
Feeling a bit uneasy, she answered the phone Luc’s cold voice came through from the other end, sounding icy. “Emma” Catherine felt a chill down her spine despite the virtual barrier of the phone screen.
“Lucht’s me, Mom

was stunned for a second Emma’s mom? Had she gone back to her parents place?
“Ah, Mother in law, it’s me, Luc,” he had always addressed them as “Mother in law” and “Father–in–law Somehow, he felt awkward calling them Mom and
Emma’s parents didn’t mind. They assumed it was the usual way of addressing those in upper–class society.
“Luc. Emma’s in the shower, I’ll tell her to call you back once she’s out,” Catherine said, her voice filed with an undertone of approval for Luc as her son-in-
Just then, Emma emerged from the bathroom, having finished dressing in her pajamas. Seeing her mother holding her phone and speaking eagerly, she quickly approached, “Mom, give it to me,”
Emma’s out. Luc, wait a second, I’ll hand the phone to her.”
She handed the phone to Emma and winked at her with a cheerful smile, implying. Take your time chatting: I won’t disturb your sweet talk
A wave of coldness swept over from the phone: Emma, get back here. Immediately, right now, without delay!
Emma took the phone back to her room. Once she verified her mother wasn’t going to eavesdrop, she shut the door and said coldly, “Mr. Taylor, it’s late. If you have something to say, say it quickly. I need to sleep
Luc did not expect such an indifferent response to this urgent request for her to return immediately. It felt as if he had punched into a cotton wad, the force dissipating. “Emma, have you grown bold now? What do you mean by this?”
Emma lazily smiled as he spoke, her voice soft but the meaning behind her words stabbing Luc in the heart. Hehe, Mr. Taylor, have you become forgetful? It was your mother who said the Taylor family does not welcome me wasn’t it? So what’s wrong with me going back to my own home?”
Luc instantly stood up, rubbed his brows, and paced back and forth in his bedroom Emma, are you asking me to come get you from Brookline now?”
“Don’t bother, Mr. Taylor. While you aren’t in the mood to sleep in the middle of the night, I still need to sleep! Goodnight!!
As soon as she finished speaking, she hung up. When she opened the door, Catherine stumbled in. Emma swiftly caught her, “Mom, what are you doing?”
t’s nothing nothing You didn’t argue with Luc, did you?” she asked, pressing her ear against the door. She hadn’t heard the conversation. How could they hang up so quickly?
When Emma noticed shoes shuffling from under the door, she guessed her mother had been eavesdropping. So, she whispered, “Does your daughter appear to be someone who would argue?”
Indeed, Catherine knew her daughter well. As long as Luc did nothing fundamentally wrong. Emma would accept and understand him. She only feared Luc becoming entangled with others.
That would not be possible. Absolutely not. If Luc dared to treat her daughter poorly, the first who wouldn’t forgive him would be her as a mother.
Luc was so exceptional that it was normal for some women to approach him. But as long as Emma held onto his heart, it would be useless for those

him before.
Meanwhile, Luc, who had been hung up on by Emma, was visibly frustrated, fuming with anger. Emma had never hung up on him
The more he thought about it, the angrier he became. Eventually, he laughed at himself. Why was he getting angry over such an insignificant person? He had been infuriated for days, just because of someone unimportant. What was wrong with him?
Shower, turn off the lights, sleep! Don’t think about it!
However, as soon as he lay down, his mind was filled with her words: “The Taylor family does not welcome her, she returns to her own home? She isn’t planning on coming back?”
No, he wouldn’t allow it, he couldn’t agree!
Suddenly sitting up, he quickly changed his clothes, grabbed his phone from the bed, and hurried downstars. He started his Land Rover and rushed
toward Brookline
Twenty minutes later, he arrived at the foot of the Brookline Residential Complex, doubling his usual speed. Perhaps it was because there were fewer cars
at night and the roads were less congested
He dialed Emma’s mobile phone, not expecting her to answer to late.
She forgot to switch it off, and the vibration of the ringing phone awoke her from her slumber. Her sleepy fingers hit the power–off button without even
checking who would call her at such an ungodly hour
The beeping and static noises echoed as Luc redialed her number, accompanied by the automatic response. “The number you dialed is turned off. Please Try again later.”
Frustrated, Luc slammed his fist on the steering wheel, the stillness of the night amplifying the echo of his outburst. Even the people stopped on the
roadside ahead cast startled glances in his direction.
He got out of the car, locked it securely, and entered the Brookline Residential Complex. The security guard deemed him non–threatening due to his respectable attire and dignified aura, thus he did not stop him. Noticing he had no keys, the guard assisted by unlocking the entrance for him.
“Thank you!”
He ventured into the Brookline Residential Complex, recalling that Emma’s house was located in building number three, Unit A, on the fourth floor. Since there were no elevators in the old complex, only stairs, Luc arrived at the fourth floor. Upon recognizing the house number, he gave the door three firm
knocks
No one answered, perhaps because everyone inside was asleep. He knocked a few more times, stirring the neighbors next door, who opened their door and asked, “Who’s there? Disturbing a good night’s sleep. Don’t people need to rest?”
Seeing a handsome, sharply dressed man standing in front of the Johnson’s house, another resident asked, “Are you… the son–in–law of the Johnson
family?”
Luc slightly furrowed his brow, remaining silent for a moment before giving a slight nod
Martha had only seen Luc once before and vaguely remembered him. As he rarely visited the Johnson family, she nearly forgot his appearance. However, anyone would remember meeting one of the talented young men from Brookline.
“Why are you visiting the Johnson’s home at this late hour? Did you and Emma have a spat?”
Martha was known in the Brookline Residential Complex for being a prime gossip, stirring up chatter about anything and everything–from the child punished by his parents one day (his grades must have been bad) to a pet gone missing the next day (clear evidence of the owner’s lack of compassion) to a late–night domestic dispute heard the day after.
Sam emerged at the sound of the chatter outside, opening his door to see Luc standing there, which surprised him quite a bit. “Oh! It’s Luc. Come on in!” With an eager welcome from his future father–in–law, Luc replied, “Father–in–law, it’s quite late, and I didn’t mean to disturb you. I am here to pick up Emma.”
His indifferent demeanor revealed a touch of aloofness and awkwardness in his speech.
When Martha saw that Luc had been invited in by Mr. Johnson, she glanced over and closed the door with a hint of disappointment. They must have argued, she thought How could the Taylor family, one of the noble families from Boston, set their sights on the daughter of a seamstress? It must have been a stroke of luck that they happened upon such a fortunate event, but this kind of good fortune requires the right destiny. And no doubt, in a few days, they would be filing for divorce.
Upon hearing that Luc had arrived, Catherine’s sleepiness instantly vanished. She quickly put on her shoes and came to the living room, enthusiastically greeting. “So it’s Luc! Take a seat. How come you only arrived so late?”
Had the young couple had a falling out? Luc’s face seemed a bit off
“She’s asleep. I am going to wake her, Catherine said, draping on her coat, opening the door, and walking into her daughter’s room. Mr. Johnson wanted to stop her, but it was too late. Since Luc had already arrived, was it necessary to wake her up?
She also had a tough job! Today, when he saw his daughter, he felt that she had lost quite a bit of weight
