Chapter 50: Filling the Emotional Void

Luc’s assistant, Beneth, was browsing Twitter when he noticed a trending topic. There, Emma, dressed in a white lab coat, was diligently attending to an elderly patient. She was sincere and attentive to each individual who came for a consultation, offering advice and precautionary measures with a heartfelt smile that earned her the title of the most beautiful healer in the world. 

The post had garnered over a million shares, with even their hospital’s official Twitter account tagged. 

Comments flooded in: 

“Her smile is so genuine and infectious.” 

“Yes, she seems very approachable.” 

“She truly is the most beautiful healer in the world!” 

“After seeing so much negative news, her smile brightened my gloomy heart…” 

“They say the eyes are the windows to the soul. Some people may be superficially pretentious, but she radiates true kindness. You can see her inner goodness through her clear eyes!” 

“I didn’t expect such a stunning female doctor. Beautiful both inside and out!” 

“Is she from the West? She looks different.” 

“Which hospital is she affiliated with?” 

“Didn’t you see the tag? She’s from Boston General Hospital.” 

“She must be the pride of Boston General. So beautiful!” 

“Such a young doctor; she must be single, right?” 

Beneth had just finished scrolling through Twitter when he entered the elevator to the eighth floor with Luc. He looked up at the tall, handsome man in front of him, dressed in a white lab coat, his eyes filled with a curious intensity. 

Noticing Beneth’s unusual demeanor, Luc glanced back at him with his penetrating gaze. Beneth felt flustered and quickly averted his eyes. “If you have 

something to say, just say it.” 

“Doctor Taylor, um, Doctor Johnson… is trending online.” 

“What do you mean trending? Is it causing any trouble for the hospital?” Luc’s expression turned serious. Would this woman, unable to handle the pressures of the medical field, have created a scandal? 

Luc’s face was stern, his tone icy. 

Doctor Taylor… was he fulfilling his duties as a husband? The last time Doctor Johnson traveled, he had been the last to know. He hadn’t gone to the 

airport to see her off but rather to pick up his first love… 

Now that Doctor Johnson had been named ‘the most beautiful medical envoy,’ there was no hint of joy on his face. Instead, his first reaction was to 

assume Dr. Johnson had landed him in trouble. 

Beneth felt a pang of sympathy for Doctor Johnson. Coupled with the gossip circulating the hospital, his concern for her grew. Yet, he had to admit, Luc was an exceptional surgeon, renowned for his medical theories and exquisite surgical skills, earning him the nickname ‘The Scalpel‘ in Boston. 

But when it came to personal emotions, he was far from warm. 

“Doctor Taylor, the hospital has indeed been affected, but in a positive way. The media has recognized Doctor Johnson as the most beautiful medical 

envoy.” 

Upon hearing this, Luc’s cold demeanor softened slightly. However, he still didn’t show the pleasure that Beneth had hoped for. 

Beneth couldn’t help but think: Was Doctor Johnson married to Doctor Taylor? He seemed more indifferent to her than to a stranger. 

“Is it on Twitter? Do you want me to send it to you?” Beneth unlocked his phone and opened Twitter, ready to share it on Instagram. 

“No need.” Why should he care about the woman who never thought to inform him? Why should he bother paying attention to her? 

The two exited the elevator to find a group of medical assistants and nurses engaged in a lively discussion: 

“Big news! Our own Doctor Johnson is trending online!” 

“Who knew Doctor Johnson could look so stunning on camera?” 

“Doctor Johnson has always been eye–catching. It’s just that she doesn’t often dress up. Plus, with everyone focused on Doctor Taylor, how could they notice her beauty?” 

“Looking at it this way, Doctor Johnson and Doctor Taylor seem like a perfect match, with their contrasting beauty and talent.”

“Haha… cut the chatter. Weren’t you the one who criticized Doctor Johnson the most?” 

“I did not! Better watch your words; you were the one who spoke ill of her!”

“Who would’ve thought that Doctor Johnson’s trip would create such a sensation? Even the hospital is involved. Didn’t you see how the top health accounts shared the news? They even mentioned Boston General and praised the medical team for their contributions. They’ll surely receive commendations upon 

their return.” 

“Is the commendation for Doctor Johnson alone or the whole team?” 

“Surely, it’s for the team.” 

“Doctor Taylor is here.” 

“Dr. Taylor would probably be pleased!” 

As he entered, the staff members quickly dispersed, returning to their tasks. Several people, trying to gain favor with Luc, flashed smiles. “Congratulations, Dr. Taylor! Dr. Johnson has been awarded the title of ‘The Most Beautiful Angel of Healing in the World!” 

With a frosty expression, Luc chose silence, not responding as they had hoped. Instead, he retreated to his office, his mood dark. Watching him go, the same people began to murmur, “Does Dr. Taylor seem to be in a bad mood?” 

“Be confident; drop the ‘seems to be.“” 

“Dr. Taylor is indifferent towards Dr. Johnson!” 

“Isn’t he always like this? It’s nothing new.” 

“Sigh, it’s a pity for Dr. Johnson. Despite being the one married, he seems taken by another.” 

“I wonder how Dr. Johnson will react when she returns…” 

“Quiet down! Do you want Dr. Taylor to hear this?” 

But Luc was uninterested in their whispers. Once back in his office, he promptly shut the door. 

Settling into the soft chair by his desk, he pulled out his phone, his fingers instinctively opening Twitter. Seeing the report by the hospital’s official account about ‘The Most Beautiful Angel of Healing in the World,‘ he clicked on it, only to be met with a picture of Emma. Her sincere, infectious smile radiated warmth; with her hair tied back and her lab coat fitting perfectly, she resembled an angel descended from above. Her pure eyes, filled with kindness, seemed capable of dispelling any patient’s suffering. 

He stared blankly at her picture. He had always known her smile was filled with warmth. Wasn’t he drawn to her passionate and sunny disposition in the first place? 

But ever since the day she fell ill with fever, she had never shown him such a smile again. It was as if she had become a different person. The affection she once displayed was gone, replaced by indifference and distance. Her face had turned cold and aloof, even colder than that of a stranger. 

After leaving the old mansion, she didn’t want to go home anymore. She avoided him, seeking to keep her distance. When did they become the most familiar strangers? 

Luc’s face reflected a mix of emotions, his brows furrowing in sorrow. 

These days, whenever Lindsey invited him out, he would join her. He accompanied her shopping, dined with her, and watched movies with her as if trying to make up for the five years that had slipped away. 

Yet, in the stillness of midnight, the space beside him felt cold. He began to wonder, if he wanted to make up for the sweet moments lost with Lindsey in those years, or if he just trying to fill the emptiness in his heart left by Emma’s decision to leave.
