Chloe became obsessed with Ethan, skipping
homework to bake him cookies. Our school,
though international, had rigorous academic
く
standards, and most of the students were high
achievers. Chloe, already behind, and now
neglecting her studies, completely bombed the
midterms. Her scores were even worse than the
kids who skipped class to race cars.
Naturally, as the “evil” sister, I had to spread
the word. Five minutes later, a blurred image of Chloe’s report card appeared online. The
scores were so low that it immediately went viral. Everyone knew each other in our circle,
and with a little prodding from Sarah, Chloe was quickly identified. Someone then posted my report card, showing my top ranking.
The comments rolled in: “Wow, same family, different planets…” “Gold diggers aren’t known for their brains.” “I heard she sits next to Ethan. His grades have dropped too.” “He got a
terrible grade on that economics project
because he had to carry her. He dropped to,
like, fifteenth in the class.”

I watched the comments multiply, a satisfied
smile spreading across my face.
The report cards were emailed to everyone.
Chloe saw hers, then the online posts, and
stormed over to me, eyes blazing. “Ashley! How
could you humiliate me like this? Posting my
grades online?”
The whole class stopped to watch. I raised an
eyebrow. “Your grades are atrocious. What did
you expect? Instead of confronting me, maybe
focus on studying. Stop chasing boys and hit
the books.”
Chloe flushed, speechless. Ethan rushed to her
side, and she immediately melted against him,
sobbing. I couldn’t resist. “Just like your gold-
digging mother. The apple doesn’t fall far from
the tree.”
That did it. Chloe shoved Ethan away, grabbed
an X–Acto knife from a nearby desk, and

lunged at me. Ethan was faster. He snatched the knife and threw it to the floor. Chloe stared
at him, shocked, as he calmly smashed my
tablet on the desk.
“I warned you, Ashley,” Ethan said, his voice ice cold. “You and Chloe are sisters. This is disgusting. I’m done. We’re over.” He grabbed Chloe’s hand and stormed out, leaving me with the wreckage of my tablet and our engagement. Chloe, stunned by this sudden victory, let
herself be dragged away.
News of Ethan breaking off the engagement over a gold digger reached my dad fast. He rushed home from the country club and went
crawling to the Parkers‘ to smooth things over. Mrs. Parker greeted him with a smile. “Ethan
has moved on from your eldest, but your
younger daughter is a sweet girl. I’m quite fond
of her.”
Dad, relieved, went back to his carefree life.

Chloe, after hearing the news, became
insufferable. She dragged her posse to the mall
for a massive shopping spree. I sipped tea in
the garden while Liam peeled a grapefruit.
“Next time, tone it down a bit,” he said. “If
Ethan hadn’t been so quick, that knife would
have sliced your face.”
I scoffed. “I can’t stand the sight of her. She
reminds me of her mother.”
Liam paused. I continued, “Mom was on her
deathbed, waiting for a kidney transplant. A
perfect match was found, but that woman stole
it! We begged Dad, we begged the doctors, but
he said his mistress was carrying his child, so
she needed the kidney. Mom died, and that
woman lived, had a son, and thought she could
take Mom’s place. A scholarship student Mom
helped, betraying her like that! Disgusting!”
Liam put the peeled grapefruit on the table
beside me. “At least she and her son are gone,”

he said softly. “That car accident took care of
them. Now it’s just Chloe and Dad. Much easier
to manage.”
Mrs. Parker, true to her word, threw an
engagement party for Ethan and Chloe. Before
the party, Chloe preened in front of a rack of
designer dresses. Seeing me come downstairs,
she simpered, “Oh, Ashley! It’s my engagement
party! Help me choose a dress!”
I.smirked. While no one was looking, I grabbed
a measuring tape and tied her up. Weakened by
her constant dieting, she was no match for me.
I leaned in, a smile playing on my lips. “You’re
good at provoking me. How about I take your
tongue as a souvenir?”
Chloe’s eyes widened in terror. Liam appeared,
pulled us apart, and yelled at me, “Ashley! Are
you insane? She’s about to get engaged to
Ethan! You’re just jealous!”
