After humiliating Liam, I felt a lot better. I told
the driver to take me to my favorite dessert
shop.
I was about to celebrate when someone
called my name. It was Ethan!
I blushed, because I dreamt about him
yesterday.
He leaned against his Maybach.
“You know me?”
We weren’t in the same class so we didn’t
<
We weren’t in the same class, so we didn’t
really know each other. The only time that
we’d talked was when I fell and he helped me
- up.
He smiled. “I don’t just know you, you saved
me before.”
“I did?” I, Hailey, had saved someone before?
I didn’t know I had it in me.
Ethan nodded, “Back in junior high.”
We were in the same middle school. He
wasn’t as tall or as attractive back then. He
might not have been as tall as me then. One
time, some older kids were ganging up on
him, and I’d rushed to his rescue.
After all, I had a black belt in taekwondo, and
<
I was always up for doing the right thing.
He said, “You’re the pretty girl who saved
me!”
I’d always thought that was a sixth grade kid.
“I’m sorry, I always thought you were a sixth-
grader. I didn’t know you were so…”
I didn’t want to say “short.
Ethan looked like he knew what I was going
to say, “Yeah, I was pretty short back then.”
“Are you going to get desserts?” Ethan
looked at the dessert shop.
I nodded.
<
“Let me treat you. It’s my way of repaying my
debt.”
Before I knew it, Ethan had already pulled me
inside.
His hands were cold. When I looked up, I
could see the back of his head and his
slightly pink ears.
–
So, he was nervous too?
Ethan bought all the desserts I looked at. We
had a ton of pastries by the time we left.
I smiled, “You’re being a little too generous.”
He looked at me and laughed, “Anything for
Hailey, as generous as it needs to be.”
<
My heart skipped a beat.
Ethan put the desserts in my car. He then
ruffled my hair and said, “Hailey, I’ll be
waiting for you at Harvard.”
I blushed and replied “Okay”
I was suddenly sure. I knew that I was the one
he was waiting for and that he wanted to go
to Harvard for me.
As I looked into his eyes, I almost lost myself.
