My heart was shattered into tiny pieces. I left,
got in my car and drove away.
The Fall
The next morning, Jake woke up by Mia’s side.
He kissed her on the head and thought of how
he would apologize to me. Maybe take her for
tea?
He reached for his phone, when his assistant
called. “Mr. Caldwell, something bad happened.
Your wife was traveling last night and was
swept away in a mud slide! She’s been washed
away in a lake!”
“That’s rubbish. She was in the house with me!
How dare you say that!” Jake yelled, but fear
was starting to creep up his spine. He ran
upstairs and saw that the room was empty, her
clothes were gone. There was a divorce paper
on the table.
Jake was shocked. He didn’t know how this

could be. “What’s the address?! I need to go!”
Mia came running, “Is Auntie being annoying
again?” she asked, “If she wants me to leave, I
will.”
Before she could say another word, Jake
pushed her out of the way. “Just go, you’re
only causing more problems!” he yelled at her.
She was so shocked, because he had never
yelled at her before.
Jake ran to the lake, running every red light.
The rescue team had already arrived, and they
were pulling a black car from the water. It was
empty. Jake grabbed his assistant by his collar.
“Where is she?! How do you know it’s her?!”
“We haven’t found her, but the car was booked
in her name. The driver, who survived, saw her
picture.”
Jake saw the photo. He ran to the lake to look
for her. He would do everything he could to find
her.
The divers came back up. “Are you the family?”
they asked, showing him a bracelet and some
ripped clothing. “We couldn’t find her in the

lake, she has been carried away by the current.
It is likely that she has passed away.”
Jake’s head was spinning. “No! That’s not
true!” She had survived so much, she wasn’t
going to die like this.
He hadn’t had a chance to ask her why she left,
or why she was divorcing him. He couldn’t
believe it. He had to see her body before he
would give up.
He thought of the night before, when he kissed
Mia, and realized that I must have seen it all. He
had no right to think that I didn’t know.
He couldn’t get Mia out of his head. Mia was
nothing compared to me. He was wrong to be
with her, she was nothing.
Jake was going crazy, he ran into the water, to
look for me. The rescue team shook their heads
and left the area.
The Hunt
For the next week, Jake had hired all the search
and rescue teams that he could pay for. He
searched the lake and the sea. He even put out
an appeal on the company’s social media,

Everyone knew that he loved his paralyzed wife. People on the internet thought he was a good
man.
I was watching all of this from a rehabilitation
clinic in Switzerland. It was good that I used the faked–death tactic. He was too focused on
looking for my body and didn’t think to trace
my movements.
I was doing physical therapy every day. It hurt
like hell. But it didn’t hurt as much as Jake had
hurt me. I had been a dancer, I was used to
physical pain. I was so happy to feel my legs
working again.
My private detective told me, “Should I release
the things yet?”
“Release what I gave you earlier.” I replied.
The next day, a lot of bloggers released a
scandalous story. It was about the high–society
circle in the capital. They exposed the entire
shrine in his room, and the adoption document.
They even published photos of Jake kissing
Mia.

The post went viral. It turned out that Jake and
Mia weren’t related. The internet was not happy
about this news.
“What a mess! How could an uncle and his
niece get together! They’re married to other people! It’s gross!”
People pointed out that the photo was taken on the night of the accident. “No wonder why she
left, she saw her husband and her niece kissing
in her house!”
“That poor woman, she thought her husband

thought I was a victim. They hated Jake and
Mia.
My old friends from the dance company also
reported that Mia and my fiancé were together
at the wedding. “How could she try to steal her

Mia’s husband came back from his trip and
