On the way home, Chase kept looking at me.
I pulled his face away.
“What?”
He tried again. “So, you liked me from the
start?”
Since I had talked about being a body double,
he had been happy.
I looked at his face. It was hard to say no.
When you’re lost, and someone is like a star,
then they shine down on you, it’s easy to fall
for them.

And when you look closer, you see that the
real person is so much nicer, and more fragile
than you thought.
Chase’s dad had died when he was five.
Before that he had a perfect life.
Mrs. Thompson was a happy and silly woman.
When her husband died, her family wanted to
take the company. The mother and son could
have easily lost everything they had worked
so hard for.
Mrs. Thompson started working to make sure
they were safe, she had to stay strong, and
couldn’t fall apart.

Chase was alone. He felt it was his fault that
his mom wasn’t around, so he had become a
perfect son, always doing what he was told.
He got perfect scores, did everything that
was asked. But his mom was always working.
There was no one to cheer for him. Birthdays
were spent with a dark house.
Chase got tired of being good. He became
bad, he didn’t go to a top school, and started
acting out.
And when he went to acting, his mom was not
mad, she went and bought a company to
make sure he was safe.
They were so close but so far apart
