Chase, full and happy, took his bowl to the
kitchen. When he returned, he sat next to me
on the couch, holding a pillow, trying to play it
cool, but watching me closely.
I finished a game, the victory theme blasting
from the speakers. Chase leaned toward me.
I gave him a look. “Want to team up?”
Chase’s eyes lit up, but he went back to
‘cool‘. “Whatever,” he said.
We were gaming together fast.
“When did you add me?” Chase asked.
I was casual. “No idea. Probably from a

match, or something.

Chase didn’t look completely convinced, but
he didn’t say anything more.
Chase was terrible at gaming, the classic
‘stuck in diamond‘ player. He wasn’t bad, but
he wasn’t good either.
But he was fast, smart, and we worked well
as a team.
That afternoon, I took him up 20 ranks, all the
way to Master.
After another victory, Chase said, “You’re so
good. Why were you still diamond before?”
“Busy, no time to play,” I said.
I did have a Grand Master account, but it had
been hacked.
Chase looked at me, a few times. He was
going to ask something, but a new game
started and he shut up.
