The evening breeze dissipates
Chapter One
The day before our wedding, Jake was killed
in a car accident.
Everyone expected me to fall apart, but I
didn’t cry or make a scene.
Five years later, I ran into him at a hotel. He
was back from the dead, but he had amnesia.
Amidst the cheers of a crowd, he and my
stepsister were making out.
Seeing me standing alone, he grinned smugly.
“So, you’re the fiancée I supposedly had? Still
waiting after five years? You’re a total simp,
aren’t you? Can’t live without me?”
“I know you’re crazy about me. Since you’ve
been saving yourself for five years, I might
keep you around as my side chick. But the
‘Mrs. Jake‘ title is only for Ashley. I’ll be with
く
Ashley on Mondays, Wednesdays, and
Fridays, and visit you on Tuesdays,
Thursdays, and Saturdays. You should be
thrilled.”
I actually was thrilled. “Sorry, you’ve got the
wrong girl.”
Jake didn’t know that on the night of his
accident, I received a video.
He had no idea that during the five years he
and Ashley were living it up,
I had already married another man and had a
four–year–old child.
And that man was his uncle.
I never expected to see Jake again like this.
He had Ashley’s waist in his arms, bodies
pressed together, kissing her passionately as
everyone cheered them on.
A few minutes later, Ashley, her cheeks
flushed, leaned into his embrace, playfully
<
complaining, “I give up, I can’t breathe, you’re
so rough! I’m mad at you, hmph!”
Jake was nuzzling her neck. “This is rough? I
wonder who was begging me last night…”
The cheers in the room grew even louder,
with everyone calling her “Sis–in–law” and
laughing.
Ashley pretended to cover his mouth, but she
melted into him like she had no bones.
Someone joked, “Jake, it’s been five years,
isn’t Evelyn still upset?”
Jake leaned back on the sofa, shrugging
carelessly. “Upset? Of course, she is. I just
haven’t had enough fun yet. Once Ashley and
I get married, I’ll magically remember.”
“Everyone knows she loves Jake so much
she’d lick the dirt off his shoes. Now that she
knows he’s alive, she’ll probably be like five
years ago, praying on her knees a million
times for Jake’s well–being.”
“Haha, just thinking about Evelyn’s pathetic simping makes me crack up. She’s the queen of clinginess. I heard she had a terrible time overseas these past five years. Without Jake,
she can barely survive.”
The laughter in the room almost blew the roof
off.
I was about to leave, but someone with sharp
eyes spotted me.
“Sis–in–law!”
This guy, who had been laughing the loudest
at me for being a simp, awkwardly tried to
make excuses. “Jake didn’t tell you he was
alive because he lost his memory and has
someone else now. We didn’t want you to be
hurt.”
“Yeah, yeah. We all know Jake loves you the
most, but he forgot you. Even if you make a
scene, he’ll just think you’re crazy.”
Before I could say anything, Jake scoffed.
く
“So, you’re the fiancée who supposedly loves
me to death?”
Looking at my simple clothes, he made a
face. “Without me, how did you end up
looking like a ghost? Are you really that
desperate for me?”
Jake was still Jake, arrogant and full of
himself.
After five years, looking at the smug
expression on his face, I didn’t feel any of the
old butterflies.
Only disgust.
I had just gotten off the plane and hadn’t
even gotten over the jet lag.
I came to this hotel only because my
daughter’s favorite strawberry mousse was
only available here.
Seeing that I didn’t say anything, he lazily
pulled Ashley closer and gave her a quick,
passionate French kiss, leaving a string of
L
saliva connecting their lips.
“Ew, you’re so annoying. Your ‘sister‘ is
watching.”
I pursed my lips, feeling physically
uncomfortable.
Jake misunderstood my expression and was
pleased. “What’s there to be afraid of? You’ll
be my ‘Mrs. Jake‘ soon. If she still wants to
be with me, she’ll have to get used to it.”
He raised an eyebrow at me. “Since you’ve
saved yourself for five years, I might keep you
around as my side chick. I’ll be with Ashley on
Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, and visit
you on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.
On Sundays, you can come to serve us.”
Everyone immediately chimed in.
“See, sis–in–law? Jake lost his memory but
still remembers to love you, even giving you
three days a week.”
“That’s right. Without Jake, look at how
L
you’ve turned out. You probably spent the last
five years as a waitress or cleaning toilets
overseas, right? Agree quickly. If Jake
changes his mind, you won’t even get to see
him if you beg on your knees.”
Ashley tightened her grip on Jake’s arm,
asserting her dominance and looking at me
provocatively. “I didn’t want this, but Jake
only loves me now. I can only apologize for
making you be the secret mistress.”
“Who cares about being a mistress? She can’t
live without me. I could tell her to die, and
she’d do it.”
My heart felt like it had been pricked lightly.
Five years ago, during the car accident, he
had used his body as a shield to protect me.
As his eyes closed, he held my trembling
hand, weakly comforting me. “Don’t be
scared, sweetie. Your husband is lucky and
won’t die. Your husband promised to be your
L
guardian forever, so no one can hurt you.”
Could someone who loved me so much really
become a completely different person
