When I got back to the house, I immediately contacted my lawyer.
He expertly and efficiently analyzed our
assets, a process he was familiar with, as
he’d worked on our divorce several times
before, always unsuccessfully.
But this time was different.
I was serious, focused.
<
After a while, my phone rang. It was Liam. He’d probably realized I’d left early without telling him and was upset because he had lost face. When I answered, his voice was cool. “Chloe, what exactly are you trying to do?”
I signaled my lawyer to pause. I said calmly, “I
want to divorce you.”
There was a pause on the other end. When he finally spoke, Liam’s tone was softer, almost
cautious. “Is this about Seraphina?”
I didn’t respond.
He thought he’d guessed right, and he
seemed to relax a little. He sounded almost
soothing. “Chloe, she messed up your
birthday, that was wrong, she should
apologize, I’ll have her come over right
<
away…”
Even now.
He thought I was being stubborn because of
Seraphina, but he wasn’t ready to let her go
either. It was ridiculous.
I chuckled softly and interrupted him with a
calm, level voice. “Liam, this has nothing to
do with anyone else.”
“Then what…”
“I want to divorce you because I don’t love
you anymore. Liam, there’s a long road
ahead. I’m not going to keep walking it with
you.”
I finally said the words, like I was setting
down a heavy burden. There was a tinge of
regret, but mostly, it was relief, a sense of
freedom.
Liam was silent for a while. I could hear him
tapping his fingers on his desk, like he was
thinking. Finally, he spoke, his voice dull and
heavy. “What are you up to this time?”
