I snorted. “How can you prove it’s my dad’s?”
Aunt Susan jumped in. “I can. Stacy, we didn’t
want to make things nasty because you’re his
<
daughter, but we’re going to sue you.”
I laughed. “Go ahead.”
“You’re crazy!” Aunt Susan grabbed Karen’s
arm and started to walk out. “I told you we
couldn’t reason with this b-”
I interrupted, “Wait!”
Aunt Susan turned. “Changed your mind?”
“Brittany, Karen, don’t forget to move out. I’m
changing the locks.”
“Where are we supposed to go?” Brittany
asked.
“Not my problem. Go to your real dad.”
The trio stormed in, but they left humiliated.
And with a couple of new bruises.
I could barely breathe from all the laughing.
A few days later, I got a letter from their
lawyer.
I forwarded it to my lawyer.
Two days later, my lawyer told me their
lawyer wanted to talk and settle this out of
court.
They must’ve realized they didn’t have a
case.
My dad was ashes. There’s no way to prove
the kid was his.
Г
My grandparents were already dead.
Just bones.
One sunny afternoon, I arrived at my lawyer’s
office.
Karen and Aunt Susan were already here.
Karen stated, “This child is John and I’s.”
I rolled my eyes. “Prove it.”
Their lawyer pulled out a paper from a folder.
“Our paternity test.”
I grabbed the paper and stared.
Karen smiled, touching her stomach.
“Your dad and I lived together for years. He
would have left hair or something. It was
enough.”
Aunt Susan was even cockier. “Karen’s having
a boy, your little brother. And you don’t even
have the Johnson last name anymore. You
already won getting half.”
I frowned at the paper. Then I laughed.
“Karen, I would be embarrassed to say this,
but you’re proud? Wow.”
Karen looked confused. “What do you mean?”
“Didn’t my dad tell you? He couldn’t have
kids.”
I pulled out a paper and slammed it on the

Chapter 2
It was Dad’s medical records, proving he got
a vasectomy twenty years ago.
When my mom was pregnant with me, she
had a nightmare about Dad cheating.
Every day she went off the rails, waking up in
tears.
Dad felt bad and had the surgery, no
questions asked.
Karen’s face went white as a sheet.
But their lawyer kept his cool. “Even with a
vasectomy, it’s possible to get it reversed.”
“Reversal means another surgery, right? Do
you have proof of that?”
They all stared at each other, unprepared.
I kept going, “Dad loved my mom. Then Karen
came along. Karen has some real skills. How
could she get pregnant by a guy who was
snipped? Unless he’s not my brother.
Especially considering everyone knows she’s
a mistress.”
“Stacy, you’re disgusting!” Karen slammed
her hands on the table, letting her composure
slip, “Your dad and I are in love! We were
together first. Your mom was the other
woman!”
Hearing her insult my mom, my smile
vanished.
Г
I stood up. “I know the truth. You dumped
Dad because he was broke. Later, he met
Mom, and Grandpa gave him his first
investment. Dad made something of himself,
and you came crawling back, pretending you
were his true love. Without Mom, John
wouldn’t have anything!”
My eyes started to water.
We were happy until Karen and Brittany
showed up.
From that day on, my mom lost her husband.
And I lost my dad.
Dad’s heart belonged to Karen.
Г
Whenever she called, he ran to her like a dog.
Later, Mom got kidney failure. Dad wanted a
divorce and give her his kidney to make up
for his mistakes.
But the day of the surgery, Karen jumped off
a bridge.
Dad bailed to go find her.
Mom died that day.
She could have survived.
I could have given her my kidney if Dad didn’t
want to.
But everything was set. And Karen chose that
She knew the importance of that day.
I fought with Dad.
The next day, Karen and Brittany moved into
Dad’s other house. I was furious.
Brittany accused me of stealing from her.
Dad believed her and told me to apologize. I left for good.
