Changed my name at the police station.
I wiped away the tears, put my sunglasses
back on, and turned into the cold–hearted
heiress.
“You can’t prove that thing growing inside
you is my brother. So, there’s nothing to
く
discuss. Get the proof he had the surgery
reversed, then we can talk inheritance.”
I grabbed my bag and left.
They’d never find the proof.
John’s vasectomy was a lie, he regretted it on
the surgery table, and had the record faked.
They’re damned if they go to court over that.
I thought Karen and Aunt Susan would give
up, but the next day, Aunt Susan showed up
with a bunch of people, demanding money.
I had just woken up, still grumpy.
“What money?”
“Your dad borrowed $10,000 from us years
ago and never paid it back. Now that he’s
dead, it’s gotta be paid.”
Aunt Susan slapped a yellowed piece of paper
on the table.
I looked at it: a promissory note with Dad’s
signature and fingerprint from twenty years
ago.
I knew the story.
Dad started his business and needed money.
He borrowed from Aunt Susan.
She didn’t want to lend it.
Dad promised to pay back double, so she
gave him $5,000, but he wrote the note for
$10,000.
Later, when Dad had money, he tried to pay
her back, but she refused. She asked Dad to
buy them a house instead.
For twenty years, Aunt Susan would bring it
up, probably having gotten a fortune out of
Dad.
Now she wanted more.
I laughed. “Are you having memory issues?
The money was paid back. The house you
used to live in, Dad paid for that, didn’t he?”
Aunt Susan smiled awkwardly. “That was a
gift. Not repayment. This note is still good.”
“I won’t deny the note. It’s $10.000, right? I’l
く
transfer it to you right now.”
“Twenty years ago and now isn’t the same.
You have to give me…” Aunt Susan thought,
holding up a finger. “One million dollars.”
“You’re bold.” I put my phone down, smiling
at her. “I’d give you a million, but I’m afraid
you won’t get to spend it.”
“You’re cursing me? You killed your mom and
dad. You can’t kill me! I’m tough!”
I scoffed, asking for her bank account
number, and transferred one million dollars in
front of her.
Aunt Susan was all smiles.
She turned to leave with her crew. Before
they left, I called the police.
“Hello, 911? I’m being robbed.”
Aunt Susan turned back, trying to grab my
phone.
“You little brat, you’re calling the cops!”
I practiced tae kwon do when I was younger,
it was enough to deal with an old lady.
“Uncles, aren’t you going? You’re accessories
if you stay.”
They looked at each other and left.
With nobody left, Aunt Susan was less
aggressive.
Г
“We’re family, there’s no robbery.”
The money was back in my account.
“It’s always better to talk calmly.” I collected
the cash and hid it.
“Is the police still coming?”
“Don’t worry.” I gave Aunt Susan a look.
The cops arrived within ten minutes.
“It was a misunderstanding.” Aunt Susan said.
“My niece and I were playing around.”
The officers looked at me.
I said, “A misunderstanding, not robbery. It’s
Г
a theft!”
I showed the cops the video of Aunt Susan
stealing my antique.
Aunt Susan looked desperate, “I can return it.
It’s just dirty, I wanted to take it home and
wash it.”
I shook my head.
“I’m not listening.”
When Aunt Susan was arrested, I went back
to my hometown and set off ten strings of
firecrackers.
I gave candy to the children and seemed
more excited than I did at New Year’s.
Г
Whoever showed up to congratulate me got a
gift.
A pig and two bottles of wine.
Someone posted it online with a sob story.
It said I killed my own dad, sent my aunt to
jail, and disowned my stepmom and brother. I
was turned into a heartless woman that was
obsessed with money.
The video got reposted everywhere, and my
name was trending.
Everyone was calling me cold–blooded and a
murderer.
I couldn’t stop laughing.
