When I got home, I felt as if I had returned from another lifetime.
This was my house, yet in my past life, Celeste and Elliott, those despicable lovers, had taken full advantage of it.
Most of my time had been spent on business trips or working late at the office. Toward the
end, I was bedridden in the hospital and hadn’t come home for a long time.
Seeing me return unscathed, Elliott’s smile froze for a moment.
“Hon, why are you back?”
I gave him a meaningful smile and asked in return, “Am I not allowed to come home? You
didn’t want me to?”
His expression stiffened for a second before he forced a grin.
“Of course not! I was just concerned about you. Did the meeting go well today? You didn’t run
into any trouble on the way back, did you?”
I massaged my aching temples.
“It went smoothly. I just saw a car accident on the way home, and I still haven’t quite shaken
it off.”
The moment he heard the word “accident,” he tensed up.
“A car accident? Are you okay? If you’re hurt, you should see a doctor right away.”
Looking at his concerned face, if I hadn’t known his true nature, I might have believed he was
the perfect, caring husband.
“What’s the matter? Were you hoping I’d gotten hurt?”
“Relax, I’m fine. It didn’t involve me. I was just startled by how tragic it was for that child.”
The moment I mentioned a child, his face darkened in a way that was hard to ignore.
“A child? An accident? Did you happen to see what the kid looked like?”
I shook my head, frowning in confusion.
“Why? Elliott, you’re acting strange today.”
He forced a smile.
“It’s nothing. I suddenly remembered I had some work to handle at the office. I won’t be able
to have dinner with you tonight.”
He hurriedly grabbed his coat and rushed out the door.
I watched him leave, the corners of my lips curling into a slow smile.
Sitting down at the table, I began enjoying the exquisite dinner before me.
I could tell right away that Elliott had made it.
He was an excellent cook, and back then, it was one of the things that won me over.
What a pity. He never kept his promise to cook for me for a lifetime.
I knew he must have been convinced that I would save that child. His face earlier had been
filled with disbelief when I came home unharmed.
I thought, “So, this lavish feast he prepared was supposed to be a celebration, wasn’t it?

Back in my past life, when I was lying in the hospital fighting for my life, they must have been sitting here in my house, happily enjoying a family meal together.
Well, now, the tables have turned.”
By the time Elliott arrived at the hospital, Celeste’s wailing could be heard from the corridor.
“Doctor, how is my son?”
Elliott hesitated, afraid to step inside and face the outcome.
He had arranged for a small car and had instructed the driver to slow down or even stop if no
one stepped in to save the child.
But things hadn’t gone as planned.
From Celeste’s gut–wrenching cries, he had a terrible feeling about the situation.
The doctor sighed and shook his head helplessly.
“The child was brought in too late.
The accident only broke his legs, but because he wasn’t treated in time, he lost too much
blood and didn’t make it.
My condolences.”
A buzzing noise filled Elliott’s head.
Just yesterday, that child had been clinging to him, calling him ‘Daddy.‘ And now, he was
gone.
“How… how could this happen? The accident was right outside your hospital!
This must be your fault! You didn’t act fast enough! You killed my son!”
The doctor looked at him, utterly exasperated. Shaking off Elliott’s grip, he muttered as he walked away, “I try to be kind, and this is what I get? Unbelievable.”
Elliott stood there, speechless.
He couldn’t really cause trouble for the hospital, so he had no choice but to step inside the
ward.
The moment Celeste saw him, she lunged into his arms, sobbing hysterically.
“Elliott, why did you take so long? Our Oscar is dead!
Didn’t you say that woman would definitely save him?
“This is all your fault! You killed our child!”
Elliott was already in a foul mood, but he forced himself to remain calm and comfort he
“Are you sure she saw Oscar’s face?
She’s not the kind of person who would risk herself for a stranger. If she didn’t recognize him, of course, she wouldn’t help.”

Hearing this, Celeste’s grief turned into rage.
“What are you saying, Elliott?
This whole plan was your idea!
And now you’re blaming me?”
Her expression twisted in fury, a far cry from the delicate, alluring woman he once knew.
He shoved her away.
“The doctor said Oscar died because you called too late! And you dare blame me?
You’re just as heartless as a mother!”
Their heated argument disturbed the other patients, leading to complaints.
Eventually, hospital security had to step in and escort Elliott out.
The two of them parted on bad terms.
But Celeste was still Elliott’s true love. In the end, he would find a way to put all the blame on
This was only the beginning. A crack had already formed between them.
