“Sparky? Sparky, is that you?”
I couldn’t be wrong.
Sparky was the stray I rescued back in high
school.
It was the middle of winter, huge snowstorm
and everything. Some little jerks had thrown him
into the frozen lake to turn him into a living ice
sculpture.
I dragged him out, brought him home, and
nursed him back to health. That very night, right
in front of my eyes, Sparky turned into this
drop–dead gorgeous teenager with killer
cheekbones.
Turns out, he wasn’t just a stray dog. He was a
wolf. A werewolf.

It took a minute to wrap my head around, but I still took care of him for three years.
Then, one day, he said he needed to be free, couldn’t stand being cooped up anymore.
My heart broke, but I let him go back to the
wild.
That was ten years ago. That cute teenager
was now a man, radiating raw power and
wildness.
I thought he was gone forever. And now, here
he was, in a situation like this.
Dogs remember their owners. Wolves, too,
right?
Getting Sparky’s attention was my only shot at
getting out of here.

I started to move, but a werewolf slammed a
hand over my mouth.

“You filthy human! You think you can disrespect
the Alpha? I’m your worst nightmare!”
“Mmmph! I know him! I used to take care of
him, I’m his owner!” I struggled to say.
But as soon as the words were out, I got a kick right in the face, sending me flying.
I hit the ground hard, my stomach churning, and
I spat out blood.
“Werewolves are born free! No one owns us,
especially not you disgusting humans. How dare
you insult the Alpha! How dare you insult the
glorious werewolf family!”
The werewolf’s face was twisted with hatred.
His fangs gleamed, like he wanted to tear me
apart.

“Seriously, are you losing your mind? You think
you can escape by making up a story? You’re
seeing the Alpha and imagining you know him?”
Chad scoffed.
“Seriously, she’s just hot for him. Figure she’s
gonna be stuck here anyway, might as well try
to climb the social ladder. You think she made
all that money selling insurance without doing
some favors on the side?”
“Wow, I can’t believe you. I see now, all the
green lights over the years. Hey, Alpha dude,
you really want to be contaminated by this
tramp and let her breed with your pure and
precious bloodline?”
The garbage coming out of their mouths didn’t
even register.
“Please, let me see the Alpha. I know him. Let
me talk to him,” I begged.

Sparky was walking away. I was losing my
chance.
But the werewolf wasn’t having it.

“You’re not fit to stand in the same room as our
Alpha. You keep talking like this, I’ll rip your
tongue out and eat it myself!”
He snarled, and Sparky disappeared into the
darkness.
My heart sank.
“Don’t sweat it, man. I got the goods. Let’s just
finish the deal.” Chad said, all excited.
“Hold your horses. We werewolves are all about
honor!” The werewolf shot Chad a nasty look,
then pulled out a stack of gold bars that had to
weigh ten pounds. Chad’s eyes practically
bugged out of his head.

“Like we agreed, a pound of gold per head. Ten
pounds here,” the werewolf said.
“All right, cool! Nine people here, so that’s a
bonus, right? Next time, we’re all for doing
business again!” Chad said, rubbing his hands
together.
He didn’t notice Brittany’s nasty look behind
him.
“Ten people. I told you, honor is everything. We
won’t short you, and you won’t get a cent more
than you should.”
Chad’s face went blank.
Before he could react, Brittany gave him a
shove.
The werewolf pounced, pinning Chad to the
ground.
