Chapter 63
Three days. That’s how long I had been stuck here with Maximus, trapped in a penthouse that felt too big and yet suffocatingly small.
Three days of silence so thick, it pressed against my chest like a weight I couldn’t shake off.
We didn’t talk. Not even a word. He stayed in the lounge, stretched out on the couch, his head tilted back like he didn’t have a single care in the world.
When he was not in the lounge, he was in the guest room, but always away from me, while 1 hid in my room, pretending I didn’t notice how the silence between us only seemed in grow heavier with each passing hour.
Every morning, there was food waiting for me. Carefully prepared meals, too perfect for someone who claimed he didn’t care.
But the sight of it only annoyed me. It wasn’t gratitude 1 felt when I sat down to eat alone at the table- – -It was imitation, a simmering frustration I couldn’t quite expbin. He didn’t ask if I was hungry, didn’t even look at me when I passed by. He just – – -did his thing in silence.
I spent most of my time pacing in my room or lying on the bed, scrolling through the phone he had left for me on the second morning. It was brand new, shiny, and still wrapped in its packaging when I woke up to find it sitting on the desk by the window.
No note, no explanation Just there. Like him. Always there, yet somehow always out of reach.
At first, I told myself 1 wouldn’t use it I didn’t want to give him the satisfaction, whatever satisfaction that might be. But the boredom had become
unbearable
So. I gave in. I used it to scroll mindlessly, to drown out the thoughts that kept circling back to him, to his quiet presence, to the maddening way he filled every corner of my mind without even trying
The clothes delivered for me on his order—dresses, shoes, even lingerie- – -remained untouched in the closet. I couldn’t bring myself to wear them. They weren’t mine. But his shirts
Those I wore. They were soll, oversized, and smelled faintly of him–a mixture of maskwood and something that was just him, that cling to me no matter how much I wanted it gone.
The phone buzzed in my hand, pulling me out of my thoughts. Tara’s name flashed on the screen. My thumb hovered over the answer button for a moment before I pressed it
Zia. “Tara said, her voice a mix of relief and frustration. I was starting to think you have vanished off the face of the earth.”
I sighed. I had sem her a message before to let her know about this number and she was only contacting me now.
“Not yet.” I replied, Seaning back against the headboard.
“You haven’t called in days. “she accused, and I could almost picture her frowning on the other end of the line.
* I did send you a text. “I sighed again.
Where are you!“Her voice carried a hint of something I couldn’t quite place.
I didn’t answer. Instead, I shifted the conversation. How is everything the Pack?”
Shit! Why did I even care!
Her sigh was heavy, weighed down with more than she wanted to say. Not great. Alden has been on edge since you left. He has snapping at everyone, throwing tantrums like a child.”
“That’s not new. “I rolled my eyes,
* He yelled at Emily.“ Tara continued. “In the middle of the Pack office. She ran out crying. ”
Now that was new.
I clenched the phone tighter. He yelled at Emily! Why!
Because the talks with Alpha Rhys are not going well, and something seems to be going wrong. She said, her voice trembling slightly.

My stomach dropped. War! Aiden is not trying to wage war because he feels the talks are not going well, is her
That’s what he is saying. He is convinced it’s the only way to protect the Pack.
“No.” I said firmly, shaking my head even though she couldn’t see me. We can’t go to war. We are still recovering from the last one. Does he not remember what happened with Alpha Nathan! *

‘I am- – -pregnant, Zia, “She whispered.
My thoughts came to a halt, as I sucked in a sharp breath. “Ah, wow.
he is going
I didn’t know what to say. Maybe a congratulations would suffice? My heart surged with delight as I smiled, and opened my mouth to tell her that but she beat me to it.
*And I don’t want to lose my mate in an unne
an unnecessary war. I can’t. So, please, just for the people who still need you, please don’t abandon us.” Her voice was most as if she was crying now.
My heart sank, as I rubbed my temples. I understand. I will figure something out. Don’t worry. Innocent people won’t get hurt over Aiden’s foolishness. –
I am—counting on you.” She whispered before hanging up.
The phone slipped from my hand onto the bed as I leaned forward, burying my face in my hands.
Aiden’s recklessness, was not new, but the stakes felt higher now. The pack couldn’t survive another war- -not when they were still recovering from the losses we suffered in the last one.
Suddenly, 1 picked up my phone and decided to call my Heta but hesitation made me pause.
Two days ago, I had called Jack, asking him about the Crusher family. His report had not brought any clarity.
It turned out, the Crushers were not even from our region. They had belonged to a pack in the far lands and had only recently shown up here. I had told him to trace their origins, to dig deeper and find answers quickly.
I didn’t call him back since.
There was no point in contacting him while he was busy doing so much work
It seemed like this was a problem I had to handle on my own, alone. I had to return to the Fack.
I got down from the bed, my legs shaking slightly as I moved to the closet.
I pulled on a blue dress that I hadn’t bothered to touch before and fixed my appearance before stepping into the lounge,
Maximus was not there.
My heart raced as I walked to the guestroom, the door slightly ajar. He was lying on the bed, one arm draped over his eyes, his chest rising and falling in steady rhythm.
For a moment, I hesitated, my fingers curling into my palms. I didn’t want to break this silence, yet I couldn’t leave Reluctantly, I walked inside the room and stood by his side, staring at his pursed lips.
I didn’t know what to say, or how to say it so I just stared for what felt like an eternity.
A family. His words echoed in my ears. Had not managed to get rid of those thoughts.
What do you want!” Maximus mumbled and pulled his arm down from his eyes.
1 flinched at the sound of his voice, but I forced myself to blurt.” Aiden is causing trouble in the Pack. I think Alpha Rhys and he will end up
rausing
His sharp eyes blinked open and landed on my heated face. This was the first time we were locking eyes after he had forced me into a cold shower that day. My insides melted and ached as I swallowed
