I was not even surprised when the butler came and gave me some decent clothes to wear.
After I bathed and changed into the pink floral dress that reached my knees, I hid behind the bathroom door for a long time.
I knew Maximus was waiting for me on the other side. And this knowledge made it harder for me to want to go out.
In front of him, I had managed to pretend that what he said and what we decided didn’t matter that much, that it would not disrupt my life, or make me heartbroken.
But as more time passed, the harder it became for me to pretend to be nonchalant.
Was he really going to leave me?
Would we have nothing to do with each other in the future?

the door.
If I hadn’t been kidnapped, and my wolf side had not vanished, I wouldn’t have become this vulnerable. I missed Jessie.
Suppressing emotions was harder when I was just a woman. And not a she–wolf.
Just when I began gathering my courage to open the door and go out, a knock sounded on it. I jumped back, my heart missing a beat.
Without wasting another moment, Maximus opened the door from the other side and came to stand in the doorway. Our eyes met, and I masked my vulnerable expression right away.
“You were taking too long.” He said, his eyes roaming my body.

I opened my mouth but when he stared into my eyes with a cold look, I couldn’t get a single word out. Gritting my jaw, I went silent and just glared at him.
* I talked to Darius. We are signing a peace treaty. After that, we will leave for home. ” Maximus informed me in a robotic tone before he turned around and walked towards the door of the room.
It was so easy for him to not get affected by anything. Everything he said about making a family with me was a lie.
- Come on. We don’t have time.” He urged, standing beside the open door.
I gritted my jaw harder and followed him out of the room. Before I could walk further away, Maximus slowed down to walk beside me and grabbed my hand to intertwine our fingers.
Instinctively, my fingers curled around his bigger ones. He squeezed, making this appear so normal like we were used to it.
“What is this now?” A frown etched between my brows.
* Aaron and my warriors are not inside the estate anymore. That’s why you need to stay close to me. This way, it will be easier for me to keep you safe. “He spoke without sparing me a glance.
“I can keep myself safe. You don’t need to–
*You can keep yourself safe when you can turn into your wolf. But you can not do it right now. You are as good as a human. You will do better to remember this for as long as we are around vampires. Maximus‘ voice lowered as we moved down the stairs.
Ignoring the tension that hung in the air, I retorted. “You are a vampire too. At least half of you is a vampire.”

He only cared about what he felt. When I was missing, he cared about how HE could not protect me.
When I said I loved him, he cared about how HE couldn’t stomach the guilt of turning me into a mistress.
Now, when I rubbed it in his face that he was as much of a vampire as the whole species that he hated, he couldn’t bear it and was finally showing a crack in his facade.
I opened my mouth to push the knife deeper into his heart when his fingers tightened around mine and made me halt. I stared at the side of his face, noticing the vein ticking in his jaw.

My back hit the railing as Maximus took another step forth and looked down at me. His chest pressed against mine, forcing me to recall every moment of how he made love to me before telling me that he was letting me go.

Unconsciously, my hand reached for his cheek. I cupped it and stroked the veins under his eye. He sighed, leaning into my touch as the color of his eyes started to change again.
If I really do drink it, I will get addicted to it. I will crave your blood and get disgusted by the blood of any other. It will be disastrous. You will be bound to me forever. I will turn into a good dog to you and wag my tail whenever and however you want. You don’t want that, do you?” He blinked, leaning closer so every word caused his lips to brush against mine.

I closed my stinging eyes and sighed against his lips. Maximus sucked my bottom lip in his mouth before releasing me.

“Don’t make it sound like this is something you want to do for me. ” I snapped, opening my eyes to glare at him.
“Why? You know I can’t mark you, and unless I mark you, you are not ready to leave that fucker either. Even if you do leave him, I won’t be able to leave Sophia. And the cycle will repeat. Do you want to live as my mistress? Do you want to live like that? Like a dirty secret?” He scoffed and pulled away from me.
While remaining silent, I clenched my hands into fists. It was so scary that a stupid ‘yes‘ was about to come out of my mouth.

I was making this hard for him? I rolled my eyes, trying to push the tears back. It wouldn’t look good on me to cry twice over this jerk.
Before I could say anything more, another voice interrupted us. “ I don’t have all day for your drama. And it’s not fun to hear you two bickering

I glanced at Darius who was standing to our right, his back resting against the wall. He smirked when our eyes met, but there was something different about that smirk today.
A shiver crawled down my spine. I wrapped my arms around my chest and shot him an annoyed look.

I couldn’t wait to free myself of the control of these two brothers. If only I knew then that it wouldn’t be so easy.
