Chapter 87
ZIA
Reluctantly, I sat beside Maximus and listened to Darius who was sitting opposite us. His eyes were fixed on me as he explained the process of getting rid of this stupid band.
* You mean to tell me that you have found out everything about the witch who put this on me but you don’t know where she is right now because she ran away before your men could get her?” I blurted in one breath, my face turning red in anger.
He shrugged and leaned back leisurely. ” I will get her in a week max. You can stay here until then.”
She won’t be staying. When you find that witch, bring her to me. Or if you can’t, give us the details. I will find her. ” Maximus said before I could refuse his absurd offer.
His hand brushed my lower back, silently pulling me closer. I wanted nothing more than to push him away, but instead of that, I was leaning into him.
If he wanted to let me go, he was supposed to not show me any care.
He was making it harder than it should have been.
Darius and Maximus were exchanging a few heated words, but I couldn’t hear any of it. I was too busy glaring at the floor and trying to knock some
sense into me.
He made everything so clear. I wouldn’t cling to him and turn out to be pathetic.
With that thought in mind, I finally stood up, forcing him to leave me. He had no right to touch me now.
“Now that you have gotten what you wanted by keeping me here, I am returning home. When you find that witch, let me know, Darius. ” I told him
He looked up and raised his brows. Maximus stood behind me and tried to grab my hand again, but I was quicker to sidestep this time.
Does this mean you are inviting me to your home?” Darius‘ eyes lightened with a playful streak. ” do you know what it means to a vampire?”
I stared at him, not wavering even for a moment under that penetrating gaze of his.
“Why would I bother to know?” I said, keeping my voice leveled. “I am not some blood–sucking monster. And I am not interested in what anything means to such blood–suckers either. You can keep that knowledge to yourself for all I care.
Darius‘ smirk vanished. He gritted his jaw and continued to stare at me, but I was done with him and his brother.
I turned to my right and started walking away from there. They had made me suffer enough.
Maximus‘ footsteps followed me. His body heat could seep into my back even from a distance.
I didn’t want to be pathetic, yes.
But the connection between him and I was really pathetic.
My shoulders threatened to droop. But I held them straight and held my head high.
1 had never done anything wrong to anyone I knew or didn’t know. Then–
Why was I supposed to lower my head and grieve in silence while they lived in harmony?
I wouldn’t do that anymore.
The moment Maximus told me that he had always held back from truly forming one connection between us– -a connection that he readily could- –my love for him turned cold.
For him, I had always been dispensable. Then, so be it.
After today, I wouldn’t see him again.

Chapter 87
Zia. “A voice called out, and made me halt in front of the door that was held open today.
Slowly, I turned around and saw Darius standing in the distance. He had called me out for Goddess knew what now.
Maximus walked ahead and stopped behind me again. I didn’t spare him a glance, choosing to keep my eyes on Darius instead.
“What is it?” I asked and frowned at him.
You forgot something. “Darius whispered before he ended the distance between us and came to stand in front of me.
* What did 1- – –
Darius pulled something out of his pocket. I paused.
My gaze flickered towards his closed fist, then towards his emotionless face. He took another step closer, earning a warning hiss from the man behind me.
“I am not trying to steal her from you, Brother.” Darius smirked.
* What is it? Just hurry up and tell me! ” I snapped, my patience running thin with them.
“It’s this.” He opened his fist.
A golden, heart–shaped pendant dangled from between his fingers. I was confused.
I was seeing it for the first time.
“It’s yours.” Darius uttered before I could tell him I didn’t recognize it.
Our eyes met. Something flashed in Darius‘ eyes- – -a strange gentleness but it was gone before I could comprehend it.
*Here.” He pushed his hand forward.“ keep it. I am giving it back because I want you to know I have no grudge against you. In the future, if you have anything you need, you can ask me.”
I opened my mouth again but didn’t say anything. Silently, I raised my hand and took the pendant from him.
I was interested to know what games this powerful vampire lord was playing this time.
Besides—
Something inside me still wanted to use Darius to help convince their mother to lift Maximus‘ curse.
I wanted to hit myself over it. Maximus had always been an asshole to me, and here I was- – -unable to let go of him completely.
“Don’t lose it— Darius mumbled, then quickly added.” –this time.”
My frown deepened but I still remained silent.
Maximus got tired of waiting and grabbed my wrist to direct us out of Darius‘ territory. I glanced at Darius from over my shoulder, noticing that strange look again.
What was this now?
I shuddered, looking ahead. Maximus and I walked to the main gate. It took us a long time because I was slow, and Maximus had to slow down
because of me.
“Don’t keep anything he gave you.” Maximus said as a line of sleek black cars rolled forward to crowd the entrance.
“What makes you believe I will listen to anything you say, Maximus?” I scoffed, pulling my arm free of his grip.” Remember, you let me go. So, do not—for even a moment, do not think I will let you meddle in my life after we go our separate ways. ”
“You will need me.” Maximus‘ eyes darkened as he stared at me.
I let my gaze wander down his body before shaking my head.” I will need you, the great Alpha King, but I will never–
-call for you again.”

Chapter 87
Before he could say anything more, I turned towards Aaron. He had stepped out of the car to greet me, but I couldn’t be bothered with the men from the Caine family.
Quietly, I slipped inside the backseat of the car and closed my eyes, I wanted to sleep it off and pretend I was completely fine instead of staying awake when I was confined in the same space as Maximus.
I could feel the gentle brush of rough fingers on my face every now and then. It was enough to stir me to consciousness, but I was stubborn.
I refused to notice his soothing gestures. And continued to slip back to sleep.
That was easier until I heard Aaron mention that we were headed toward Maximus‘ pack, and not mine.
“I want to go home.”
Your l’ack members are attending a funeral today.” Maximus revealed in a low voice.
“Whose funeral? ” My eyes flew open and landed on the side of his face.
“They found the
severed, lone leg of Aiden’s father. And because he was my father’s adopted son, his funeral is being held in my Pack. They are attending that today.” He continued without even a flicker of grief on his face.
“Aiden’s father? “I blinked, unable to believe it for a moment.
He was the one who kidnapped you and sold you in the auction. “He looked down at something on his phone, completely disregarding my hanging jaw and the look of disbelief on my face.
Was this confirmation that Maximus had killed Aiden’s father?
I closed my jaw and stared hard at him. Maximus killed him just because he kidnapped and sold me?
I rolled my eyes and turned my head to look out the window. This man was really out to confuse the fuck out of me.
My heart missed a beat, as I suppressed a shudder. He really killed him for me?
My shoulders slumped the next moment. If I continued to think this way, I would go down the rabbit hole again. It would be so hard—to let go of this man and walk away.
But I would.
Yes, I would walk away from him.
I blinked back the tears that threatened to fall. I wouldn’t cry again—I had told myself. But it was hard.
“I don’t care if there is a funeral or not.” I whispered with a heavy heart.” bring the witch and break the contract today. I can’t wait to break free of you.”
