I listened to Sarah’s rant and immediately
blocked her.
I might not have had breastmilk from my mom,
but I would make sure that Sarah never sucked
<
blood from anyone again. She was just like my foster father: a person who’d go crazy on
anyone who was not following their own way.
Sarah had known she was not the Suttons‘
daughter for a long time. She was always.
secretly looking for the girl who was switched
at the hospital. It was easy to find people from
the same month, I was with Katie, two girls..
Katie was nice and well–behaved, had her
mom’s personality, so Sarah chose the wrong
girl.
Because Katie had a crush on a boy in her
class, she would often wear my clothes that Jay
had bought me, and that’s what killed her.
Sarah and her followers had made her life a
living hell for a year.
I’d only learned the truth after Katie killed.
herself and I read her diary and found the
pictures. I finally understood why she was so
depressed and why she didn’t tell Jay or me.

They knew her weakness, they knew what a
good student and a pure girl was most afraid.
o way I was c
- of. There was to let Sarah
get away with killing my best friend.
Jay and I had investigated and found out
everything. I was born on the same day as
Sarah, and we were born in the same hospital.
Then, Jay mentioned that I looked a bit like
Sarah’s mom. He thought it was a coincidence.
But there was no such thing as a coincidence!
There was only the truth. The Jay’s family was a
business partner with the Suttons‘, so Jay and
Jack have been friends since childhood. Jay got
ahold of my hair, Sarah’s, her mom’s and my
foster dad’s and sent them to a lab for a DNA
test.
The day I got the result, I learned that Sarah
was really my foster father’s child! My hate
grew.
<
I let my hair grow long and changed my clothes.
I then anonymously mailed the DNA test report
to the Suttons‘ family office…
The next day, my mom came back from the
hospital, knocking on my door. “Lily, can we
talk for a minute?”
It was weird. She said she wanted a calm
conversation, but tears were streaming down
her face as soon as she sat down.
“Lily, I found out yesterday that Sarah has
depression.”
“She hasn’t done any harm to herself, but I
don’t want to leave her alone. If she dies, I’ll
never forgive myself.”
“Even though Sarah is not my real daughter,
I’ve been raising her for fifteen years. As a
mom, I can’t ignore her.”
<
My mom cried, but for some reason, I didn’t
feel anything. I’d seen what it looked like when
someone drained their blood until it was all
gone. My poor Katie. She had planned
everything perfectly. Her body was stiff before I
even got the message.
She had asked me to burn her body and throw
the ashes into the sea so she wouldn’t be
human ever again. My heart was completely
broken.
My mom’s tears did nothing for me.
But I couldn’t oppose her all the time.
Sometimes, you must take one step back to
take two steps forward.
“I understand, you should bring her back,” |
said in a soft voice.
“Really?” she said, her eyes lit up.
<
I smiled but didn’t say anything. My mom
rushed to her feet, afraid I might change my
mind.
“I’ll tell Sarah the good news! Her doctor said
she can be discharged today!”
My mom left happily. Even now, she was still
naive enough to think I was only making a
scene. That if she just loved us both and made
sure everyone got equal treatment, she wouldn’t
lose either of her daughters.
How foolish she was.
I peeled a tangerine, its juice bursting in my
mouth. I knew by this time Jay would have
already sent all of Sarah’s bullying evidence to
my dad’s office. The show was about to start,
and I couldn’t help but laugh.
