- 3.
I find a cheap apartment and move in.
As soon as I lie down, I feel beat.
I spend the next two days flat on my back.
On the third day, I get a call from my
business partner.
I’m a wedding planner, and I own a company
with a friend.
I’ve planned weddings for a bunch of happy
couples.
I even spent a month planning my own
wedding.
Now, that’s all gone.
When I hear the names on the phone, my
heart skips a beat.
Lask “Who are the bride and groom?”
く
Mark and Ashley is the answer.
My head starts to spin.
I say no right away.
My partner’s voice is tense. “Sarah, you know how important the Sanders family is.”
One word from Mark and I could be screwed
in this town.
I hang up and collapse on the bed.
Mark’s doing this on purpose.
He wants me to plan his wedding.
I can’t get out of it.
く
I get myself together and head over to the
wedding venue.
It’s at an estate.
The estate has a beautiful lavender field.
The breeze blows through, and the lavender
sways in the wind.
I wanted to get married here because
lavender is my favorite.
I wanted to spend the most important day of
my life in a lavender field with the person I
love.
But now, all I feel is empty.
I put it aside and get down to business.
L
discussing the wedding with Ashley.
She complains about everything, making me
change everything.
Mark sits next to her, all patient.
He’s got his arm around her waist, and he
doesn’t get annoyed.
He used to hold me like that, listening to me
plan our wedding.
After four hours, Ashley says, “Okay, let’s just
do the original plan. Sarah knows it best, so I
trust her with it.”
I look at the notes I’ve been taking and clench
my fists.
The original plan is the one I made for my
own wedding.
She knows that.
Ashley sees me not saying anything and
smiles.
She says, “The wedding’s tomorrow
afternoon. It’s a bit of a rush, but I know you
can do it, right?”
I freeze.
My wedding with Mark was supposed to be
tomorrow afternoon, too.
I look up at Ashley, and she’s smirking.
The wedding I spent a month planning is now
It feels wrong.
After a long pause, I get the word “fine” out.
Ashley cuddles up to Mark and says, “Sarah’s
such a lifesaver. We should give her a big tip,
right?”
Mark says, “That’s what we’re paying her for,
aren’t we?”
Ashley smiles even more.
I bite my lip and close my eyes.
I’m tired.
I can barely even argue.
After a while, I say quietly, “You’re the
customer, the customer is always right.”
