- 7.
I turn and walk away.
Mark tries to follow.
I say “This is a pali
I say, “This is a police station. Do you want to
go back inside?”
He stops.
I leave.
I can hear Ashley and Mark fighting.
It’s got nothing to do with me.
But Mark starts stalking me.
He finds out where I live, so I see him outside
my apartment every morning.
1
Whenever I open the door, I see his face, and
I can’t help but frown.
Г
He looks sad.
But he keeps handing me breakfast.
It’s the cream–filled buns and rice porridge I
like.
It’s from my favorite place, which is really far
from my apartment.
But when he gives it to me, it’s still hot.
I push his hand away.
The breakfast falls on the ground.
The buns roll around, getting dirty.
The rice perid
The rice porridge spills, getting on my pants.
I yell, “Can you stop messing with me? It’s so
annoying!”
He watches me with a hurt look.
Some of the hot porridge got on his hand,
and it’s red.
He says, “Sarah, I’m sorry…’

I don’t want to hear it, and I slam the door.
I change my clothes and ignore Mark.
He keeps following me around, but I drive off.
At noon, he sends flowers and lunch to my
office.
I don’t accept them.
The delivery guy calls him a bunch of times,
looking nervous.
Finally, he has to leave the flowers and lunch
by the door.
It’s a hot day, and after a few hours, the lunch
smells bad.
I hold my nose and toss the spoiled lunch and
the stinky flowers into the trash.
Then I look up and see him watching me.
I frown and yell, “Why do you keep causing
problems for me?”
Mark bites his lip, and his eyes look dark.
I rub my temples and say, “Mark, what’s the
point of this? I don’t remember you, and I
don’t want to. Can you just leave me alone?”
Mark turns white.
He stands there, looking sad.
Äfter a long pause, he says, “Sarah, can you
give me a chance? Give me a chance to help
you remember. I lost my memory, so I know
how to help you get it back.”
I say, “You lost your memory, and I lost my
memory. So we’re even. I don’t want my
memory back.”
Mark chokes up.
く
He looks miserable. “Sarah, are you still mad
at me? Ashley tricked me into divorcing you.
Can you forgive me?”
I say, “It doesn’t matter. I don’t care.”
He stops talking.
He’s breathing hard, like he’s in pain.
After a while, he says, “Sarah, you weren’t
like this before…”
