Chapter 7
He yanked my bag off my shoulder and tossed it to the floor.
The zipper wasn’t closed, so everything tumbled out in a mess.
For a moment, the room was dead silent. I crouched down to gather my things.
But before I could finish, William snatched the bag again and hurled it even farther across the room.
“You’re my woman. You’re not going anywhere.”
He said the words slowly like he meant
them.
I let out a short. “Mr. Ward, you say I’m yours–but where’s the proof?”
We were never married. No certificate, no legal ties.

don’t ask the other person for permission.
Breaking up with someone is not a request -it’s a statement.
William froze for half a second like he hadn’t thought it through.
“You want proof? Fine. Let’s go get married. right now!”
He grabbed my wrist and tried to drag met toward the door.
But I braced myself against the frame, refusing to budge. “William, don’t make this uglier than it already is!”
He stared at me, frustration etched across
his face.
“You want a marriage licensr? Fine. You want a wedding? Fine. I’ll give you
whatever you want, so why are you still leaving?” he rambled.
“Emberly, I wasn’t even upset these past few days. I just wanted you to come see me. I was only nice to Lilah to make you

jealous. If you tell me you’re mad, I’ll never do it again. Just tell me, okay?”
I stared coldly at him, his excuses sounding more pathetic by the second.
I’d spent years by his side. I knew exactly what he was waiting for–he wanted me to give in just like I always did.
But not this time. Not ever.
“It’s too late,” I said firmly. “We’re done, William. Just leave it at that.”
His mouth opened like he was about to argue again. But then his phone rang, cutting him off.
He answered with one hand still gripping me, the other holding the phone to his ear.
The voice on the other end carried through the empty room–wind howling, sirens. blaring, and a woman sobbing faintly. It was chaos.
“William… Can you come see me before I die?” Lilah’s voice was weak.

William agreed and hung up, looking helpless as he turned back to me. “Stay here. I’ll be right back.”
Then he was gone.
I’d told him already–I wasn’t waiting for him anymore.
The cab was waiting downstairs. I grabbed my things, got in, and told the driver to head for the airport.
Bored on the way, I scrolled through my phone, and notification popped up about a nearby livestream.
I clicked on it accidentally.
The screen loaded, and there she was-
Lilah.
She was sitting on the edge of a rooftop.
Below, a crowd had gathered. Behind her were doctors, nurses, and cops, all afraid she’d jump.
Then, at last, William appeared on screen.

Late as always. All eyes turned to him.
“Lilah, whatever it is you want to tell me, just come down first!”
She shook her head, tears running down her face in steady streams.
“William, I’m divorced now. My parents don’t care about me anymore, and now you’re leaving me too. What’s the point of living?” she cried. “Just let me die!”
William wiped the sweat off his forehead, looking panicked.
“Lilah, listen to me. We can still be friends, okay? Just come down. Think about Will!”
At the mention of Will, her sobs turned more frantic.
“My brother’s dead! And now you’re leaving too. If that’s the case, I might as well die with him!”
She stood up slowly, and the crowd below screamed. Rescue teams rushed to set up an air cushion.

William’s face shifted as he realized what
she meant.
“What do you want me to do to get you to come down?”
Lilah’s lips curved into a tear–streaked smile. “I want you to marry me.”
William’s answer came fast, sharp. “What?
No!”
I stared at my phone, stunned. Even in that situation, he actually refused.
Lilah looked just as shocked.
“I have depression, William! Every day I want to die! My ex–husband treated me like trash! The only man who ever cared about me is dead! I only have you. You’re the only
one I want!”
“You and Emberly aren’t even married. Why can’t you marry me?”
“If you won’t marry me, then I’ll jump!”
