“You dropped your IDs.”
He handed my mom my card.
“Thank you, Officer Chen,” my mom responded.
I tried to break out of the shackles.
“Offi…”

Frank covered my mouth once again.
“We will go now, we are late.”
I was dragged into the car.

My mother twisted my arm to cause even more pain. “If you get out of line, I will make you pay.”
Frank peeled out, running three red lights to get to the hospital.
I was rushed into the surgery.
Looking at the cold room, I wanted to get out. I
wanted to run, but I was stabbed with some
medicine and I started to feel light.
“We are taking the baby out, there is nothing
wrong with it. You are saving your sister.”
I was lifted and thrown onto the operation table.
“This is illegal! You know that?”
My mother simply glared. “There is nothing
wrong with doing surgery on your daughter. You
are mine after all!”
My dad rolled his eyes.
“We gave you everything, you have to save your
sister. What does the law even matter?”
Frank tied my hands to the table, so hard that I
could feel the ropes cutting in.
“Frank, you need to sign the papers, or we
cannot proceed.”
Frank signed the papers and gave them to my
mother.
I looked at those that were supposed to be my
family and I was filled with dread.

Frank, why don’t you leave? It is going to get
messy in a minute.” my mom said.
Frank shook his head. “I need to see it happen,
to see her cord blood taken. Then and only then
will I be et peace.”
His words were like daggers, stabbing me and
twisting me.
To him and my parents, I was nothing more
than the blood in my belly.
Because this was all illegal, there was no
anesthesia. My mother cut into my stomach and
all the pain I was going through was felt.
I could feel my skin being pulled off.
The room was filled with my screams and no
one cared.
Everyone ignored me and never showed

Dad stormed over and slapped her across the
face.
“It’s your fault! You insisted on taking the baby
out right now! Now it’s dead, what are we
supposed to tell Lily?”
Mom, still clutching her stinging face, turned on
Frank.
She hauled off and slapped him, too. “Did you hit her too hard? Did you make her miscarry on
the way here? Frank, are you trying to kill my
Lily?”
Frank, staring from the dead baby in her arms
to my sliced–open stomach, just lost it. He
kicked Mom so hard she went sprawling.
“What the hell is wrong with you? If you hadn’t
been pushing us to do this, the baby would be
alive! This was my own flesh and blood! Give
me back my kid!”
Mom was on the floor, clutching her side and whimpering in pain.
