When I was having a difficult labor,
my husband was still with his new
lover.
Chapter One
Ten years of marriage, and Mark had slept
with pretty much every friend and coworker I
had.
I acted like I didn’t see a thing.
Like always, I waddled in for my eight–month
check–up.
Then one day, Mark’s new chick ran me over
on the way to the doctor.
Blood was everywhere, and I begged him to
take me to the hospital.
Г
Mark looked down at me with this disgusted
look on his face.
“Jenny, are you seriously trying to pull this?
You trying to scam me, babe?”
“Don’t think you can fake it ‘til you make it for
- me. Even if you died right here, I wouldn’t
give a damn!”
Then, he and his flavor–of–the–month peeled
out.
By the time I got to the ER, the baby was
already gone.
My mom, she couldn’t take the stress, and
her heart gave out.
Г
When I woke up, I just stared blankly at
Mark’s grandpa, the old man.
“Just let me go, please. I’ve paid my dues to
this family with my own life.”
My phone was blowing up with texts.
It was Mark and his new squeeze, Ashley, all
over each other.
While I was dying in labor, they were getting
down and dirty at some fancy hotel.
Ashley, covered in hickeys, was snuggled up
to Mark, giving me this smug look in the
photos.
The old man, clueless, wanted to try one last
He slid a stock transfer agreement across the
table.
“Jenny, Mark’s not a bad kid, he is just lost,
and you’ve loved him for so long. Give him
one more chance. As long as I’m around,
nobody can take your place as Mrs.
Thompson.”
I didn’t say anything, I just tapped on a video
Ashley had sent me.
Their moaning filled the room instantly.
Ashley, panting, asked, “Honey, you just left
Jenny bleeding out on the side of the road.
Don’t you feel bad for her?”
Mark was biting Ashley’s neck, his eyes
“What’s to feel bad about? I love you the
most. Even if Jenny pops out that kid, she’ll
never be you.”
That nasty stuff sent the old man’s blood
pressure through the roof.
He sighed, finally giving in.
“The Thompsons have done you wrong. I’ll
handle the divorce, you’ll be free in a week.
As for your mom and the baby…”
Just then, a nurse brought the baby in.
Even God didn’t want me to waste another
second in this marriage.
The baby didn’t even take a breath.
Г
I looked away, trying not to lose it.
“Bury the baby here, I’m taking my mom’s
ashes.”
The old man nodded, looking defeated.
“It’s my fault. I shouldn’t have forced you into
this. Go on, you deserve better.”
He hunched over, clutching the dead baby,
and shuffled out.
I finally let the tears fall.
It all hit me at once.
The old man set up the marriage between
Mark and me.
Г
He needed someone to keep an eye on Mark.
I needed someone to pay for my mom’s
medical bills.
So, we made a deal.
I quit my job and married Mark.
After the wedding, I found out about Mark
losing his parents when he was little.
I even heard him crying for his mom in his
sleep.
Two broken souls, connecting at that
moment.
I wanted to fix Mark.
く
I wanted us to have a family.
I tried to be a good wife.
I learned to cook, trying to recreate his mom’s
recipes.
I traveled everywhere, trying to rebuild that
little cabin he remembered.
I even learned all the freaky stuff in bed he
was into.
I thought we had a future.
But then, on our anniversary, he paraded my
best friend into a hotel.
I lost it and went to confront him.
Mark laughed and threw the contract with the
old man in my face.
“Jenny, what do you think you are? You
thought because I played with you for a few
days, you are now Mrs. Thompson?”
“You’re just a dog my grandpa bought. You
don’t get a say in my life!”
“If you piss me off, I’ll cut off your mom’s
treatment!”
I was stunned.
After that, Mark got worse.
He started sleeping with my friends after all
the influencers.
<
He kept crossing the line.
On one side was my mom’s medical bills.
On the other was my dead marriage.
It was tearing me apart.
I fell down the stairs because I was so
stressed and found out I was pregnant.
The old man practically begged me. “Jenny,
keep this baby. It might fix things. If Mark
doesn’t straighten up after the baby is born, I
won’t force you to stay.‘
Full of mixed feelings, I agreed.
After trying so hard, Mom, baby, marriage,
love…gone.
